Heinz breaks Barnett Center record

Time fastest ever for Ipswich athlete

While most track and field athletes are just trying to get out of the blocks at this time of the year, Macy Heinz is already in late-season form.

The Ipswich freshman clocked the fastest 800-meter time ever for a female athlete — high school or college — at the Barnett Center on Tuesday. Heinz accomplished the feat during the Fuller Invitational indoor meet by running a time of 2:17.00.

The previous best time in that event at the facility was 2:17.98 turned in by an athlete from Winona State back in 2006.

“I was definitely looking at it,” said Heinz, who last year at this time ran a 2:22. “I knew it would be tough, but I thought if there’s a chance, I’ll go for it. I think I got out a little hard, but with two laps to go, I was just like, I’m going for it.”

What makes the record even more remarkable is that there was no one in sight to push Heinz. She said she is finding ways to cut time without someone running right behind her.

“I’m really working on learning the pace, so I can run it by myself,” Heinz said.

Heinz was part of a huge Ipswich victory parade during the meet. The Tigers won eight events in all. Angela Heinz won both sprint races and also ran on the same winning relay team as Macy Heinz.

“We’re all pushing each other,” Macy Heinz said. “We’ve got a lot to look forward to.”

A pair of boys pushed each other during the boys’ 200-meter dash.

Evan Carlson of Britton-Hecla edged Bryce Malsam of Edmunds Central in one of the meet’s most exciting finishes.

“I honestly didn’t know he was in lane one,” said Carlson, who ran in lane two and was ahead the whole race. “I saw him coming up behind me and I was determined to win.”

Carlson, a senior, capped a perfect start to his season by winning four events. In addition to the 200, Carlson also won the 400-meter dash and ran on two winning relays.

“I didn’t really know what to expect coming into this meet,” Carlson said. “My main goal was to place in the 400 and the 200 and hopefully get the mile relay down, too.”

Carlson prevented Malsam from winning all four of his events on the day. The sophomore won the 55-meter hurdles and the high jump and long jump in addition to his runner-up finish in the 200.

Malsam is a standout hurdler, despite his school not having a track to practice on.

“Since we don’t have a track, I actually have customized hurdles,” Malsam said. “I practice at home in our shop.”

While Malsam was pleased to his start to the season, he said there is still room for improvement.

“In the high jump I need to work on a little bit more form,” he said. “In the hurdles I need to work on a little bit more endurance.”

The Barnett Center looked much differently for track than it did last weekend when it played host to the State B boys’ basketball tournament. Dalton Storer knows that first hand, after he participated in both events.

Storer was a member of the Potter County basketball team that took third at the State B. He turned around three days later and won the 55-meter dash during the Fuller meet.

“We do quite a bit of running in basketball,” Storer said of switching gears quickly. “I was still conditioned over.”

Storer, who said blocks are the key to sprint races, is hoping his win on Tuesday will be a good sign heading into the spring.

“It was good; great confidence boost for the rest of the season,” he said. “Hopefully, it carries over to my 100.”

There were several Aberdeen athletes who won individual events during the meet.

Colton Cox of Aberdeen Roncalli won the pole vault, Grace Allen of Roncalli won the high jump, Elise Cardella of Roncalli won the triple jump, and Tucker Iwerks of Aberdeen Christian won the 1,500-meter run. Roncalli’s girls also won the 1,500-meter medley relay.

“That was exciting to see (Cox) get over the 12-foot mark today,” said Roncalli boys’ coach Terry Dosch. “Overall, it was a pretty solid day.”

The Cavaliers were just happy to be competing instead of practicing, according to Roncalli girls’ coach Mark Stone.

“There’s things that happen that you can’t duplicate in practice,” Stone said.

Like most other teams, Roncalli put a limited squad in action Tuesday, but Stone was pleased with what he saw.

“We’re pretty excited,” Stone said. “We feel pretty good about some of the things that are happening.”

Iwerks was able to hold off a solid opponent from Standing Rock to win his race.

“It was a nice opening race by Tucker,” said Christian coach Matt Scott. “He was pushed and he really did do quite well.”

The Knights are back in action on Tuesday in a meet at Eureka.

Roncalli will return to the Barnett Center for another indoor meet on Saturday. It will give the Cavaliers another crack at running against someone else besides themselves.

“You can’t beat competition,” Dosch noted. “That’s what it’s all about.”
