Golden Eagles shine at Huron Invite

Aberdeen Central’s track and field teams had their first chance at outdoor competition Friday at the Huron Invitational.

The meet featured a total of six teams competing, and no team points were kept.

The Golden Eagles came away with four first-place finishes in the girls’ division and captured a pair of wins on the boys’ side. Girls’ coach Jim Appl was pleased with the results his squad compiled, as Alexis Clark won both the high jump and pole vault, along with a third in the triple jump. Jenna Grismer won the long jump and Kaylee Kappes captured first in the 1,600-meter run.

“Our field events were our strong events,” Appl said. “I have to give credit to the coaches that work with Alexis, they do a great job.”

Clark registered a meet record with her height of five feet, six inches in the high jump, which was among a number of highlights for the Golden Eagles. Both Grismer and Chelsey Bad Moccasin also had noteworthy days, Appl said.

“Grismer goes out and earns first place in her first-ever outdoor meet, that was exciting for her,” Appl said. “Chelsey had two medals (fourth in the 100-meter hurdles, fifth in the 300-meter hurdles) in her first varsity meet. We had some solid performances from a lot of kids.”

Normally a middle-distance runner, Sydney Waterman was put to the test in the mile and responded well with a third-place finish. Kappes had to rally to get her victory in that event.

“She is more of a 400 and 800 runner for us, and we decided to try her out in the mile,” Appl said. “Kaylee has been coming off injuries and performed well. She trailed with half a lap to go, and caught the leader and went by her.” 

Madison Russman had a memorable day as well, as the sprinter placed second in both the 100 and 200 and anchored the 400-meter relay squad which finished second.

On the boys’ side, Sam Schaunaman won the discus and Mitchell Guthmiller was first in the triple jump. Boys’ coach Greg Murley said there were several nice performances for his squad as well.

“I thought Marc Seitz had a good day, 13 feet was good for him (second in the pole vault),” Murley said. “Our relay teams ran really well, both the four-by-one and four-by-two ran a second faster than they did last year. They are really working hard.”

Those relay teams were made up of Greyson Phillips, Layne Tieszen, Anthony Bachmeier and Dan Hartung.

“We look like we will score in a lot more areas this year,” Murley said. “We will be faster in almost every event.”

The Golden Eagles will send partial teams to both Rapid City and Mitchell on Thursday.
