CENTERVILLE — Despite four titles from Irene-Wakonda senior Garrett Anderson, the Centerville boys won five titles to claim the team track championship at Tuesday’s Centerville Rotary Relays. Irene-Wakonda won eight events in the girls’ division to take first place.
The boys’ team race was by far the closest of the two, as Centerville beat Irene-Wakonda 162-140 for the team title. Viborg-Hurley, Freeman Academy, Menno and Marion also competed.
Centerville got event wins from Tyrell Martz in the 110-meter hurdles (17.8), Christian Gruschin in the discus (149-11), Seamus O’Malley in the high jump (5-10), Josh DeRaad in the long jump (17-5.75) and Rory O’Malley in the triple jump (35-10.5).
Anderson of Irene-Wakonda was first in the 100 (11.5), 200 (23.0), 300 hurdles (43.1) and pole vault (11-9). Eagles teammate Kevin Hinseth had the top mark in the shot put (41-10).
Viborg-Hurley’s Logan Hansen won the 400 (55.0) and 800 (2:12.2), while Freeman Academy’s Ryan Haggerty was first in the 1600 (5:03.9) and 3200 (11:26.6).
On the girls’ side, Irene-Wakonda got titles from three athletes named Sokolowski.
Lauren was first in the 100 (13.3), 100 hurdles (16.0) and 300 hurdles (50.0), while Andrea Sokolowski won the 200 (28.3), 400 (1:08.0) and high jump (4-9). Shannon Sokolowski was first in the long jump (13-4.75).
Freeman Academy’s Clara Koener had the top time in the 800 (2:42.0) and 1600 (6:05.7), while Centerville had three top finishers in field events — McKenzie Goeden in the discus (87-8), Rebecca Hybertson in the pole vault (7-9) and Emily Steadman in the shot put (29-0).
