Central track ahead of schedule with Corn Palace Relays

Despite running two days ahead of schedule with the annual Corn Palace Relays, the Aberdeen Central track and field squads came away satisfied with their performances on a blustery day in Mitchell.

The Golden Eagles braved cool and windy conditions to get in the meet, which was moved up from its original date of Thursday due to weather considerations.

“We did some pretty good things on the track,” said Central girls’ head coach Jim Appl. “We performed okay. It wasn’t a great day out there, but it was the best day of the week. We got some things accomplished.”

The Golden Eagles got a balanced effort from winner Alexis Clark, who highlighted several events — both on the track and in field events. Clark won the pole vault, high jump and long jump events and jumped in on the relays.

“We really just wanted to establish some marks,” said Appl. “What we wanted to get accomplished with her, we accomplished.”

Appl also pointed out the efforts in the field events as a highlight to the day.

“We had a really outstanding day in the field events,” he said. “Kids really stepped up to the plate there.”

In addition to Clark’s wins in the field events, the Golden Eagles got a second-place finish from Paige Hoffman in the discus throw with a qualifying effort of 117 feet, 5 inches. Hoffman was also fifth in the shot put.

Madison Russman also turned in a state-qualifying time in the 100-meter dash for the Golden Eagles, despite fighting a side wind in the process. Russman finished fourth in the race with a time of 13.25 seconds.

“We’re just looking to improve,” Appl said of his team’s efforts through the early portion of the season. “We showed signs of that today.”

Central boys’ head coach Greg Murley also saw telltale signs of improvement with his squad’s performances on Tuesday.

“We really had a good day overall,” he said. “We took a smaller squad down and really ran well and competed hard.”

Once again, the field events took center stage for the Golden Eagles, as Sam Schaunaman posted personal bests in both the shot put and discus. Schaunaman won the discus throw with his mark of 148-2 1/2 and was second in the shot put with a heave of 46-7.

“He’s really starting to put some things together,” Murley said.

Murley also pointed out the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relay squads on the track.

“I thought our relays all ran well, especially our sprint relays,” he said. “They’re putting some things together, too.”

Aberdeen Central heads to Brookings on April 22 for the Brookings Quad. Both teams are looking forward to more favorable weather conditions in the extended forecast.

“You just need to compete as hard as you can and hopefully you get a day where your kids can get a time in,” Murley said. “Whatever the elements come, they come. I didn’t hear one of our kids complain about it. They were out cheering each other on, they weren’t huddled together under the tent.”
