Golden Eagles hit stride in final tune-up

Thirteen was the lucky number for the Aberdeen Central track and field teams Thursday afternoon.

On their last chance to get in a state qualifying mark ahead of the state championships next weekend, the Golden Eagles notched 13 such efforts. That tally included five automatic efforts and eight marks that were either improvements on previous marks or brand new qualifying performances.

Madison Russman and Lexi Weisbeck provided the fireworks for the girls' squad. Russman clocked a 200-meter time of 26.26 seconds, her best of the season, to win the event on Thursday. That time was an automatic qualifier for Russman.

Weisbeck added a third place finish in the 800 meters, leading three Golden Eagles in the top eight of that event. Weisbeck's time of 2:19.97 marked a season best by just over 11 seconds and guaranteed her a spot in the state championships field.

"That's about what she ran last year," said head girls' coach Jim Appl. "She just hasn't been healthy. She finally got healthy last week."

Chelsey Bad Moccasin and Bridget White both turned in qualifying efforts in the 300-meter hurdles. White did the same in the 100-meter hurdles. Though neither effort was an improvement, Appl was pleased with the performances in the hurdles.

Alexis Clark auto-qualified in the high jump, winning the event easily with her mark of 5 feet, 5 inches. From there, Clark bypassed the next two heights and went for 5-08, just missing out at that height.

"She's coming around to where we need her to be," Appl said of Clark, who is also amongst the state leaders in the pole vault and finished fifth in the long jump.

On the boys' side, the Golden Eagles had five new or improved state qualifying efforts led by an automatic qualifying effort by Dylan Vincent in the high jump.

Vincent cleared 6 feet, 1 inch to win the event. That mark meets the automatic qualifying standard.

Vincent was one of two athletes to win their events for the boys. Marc Seitz won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 42.50 seconds. That effort puts Seitz amongst the provisional qualifying hopefuls for next weekend's state tournament.

Senior Greyson Phillips finished second in the 100 meters in a time of 11.17 seconds and Micah Reierson turned in a fourth place time of 2:03.86 in the 800-meters. Both efforts were provisional qualifiers, as was Tanner Peltier's second place time of 4:39.03 in the 1,600 meters.

Sam Schaunaman finished second in the discus with an automatic qualifying distance of 143-11, well off his best of 152-11.

"The kids really competed hard. Really proud of the effort," said Roncalli. "We've just got to build on this to head to the state meet."
