Aberdeen Central’s boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams began their season Friday at the Pierre Triangular.

Tanner Peltier and Brooke Malsom each brought home individual wins at the unscored event. Central, Pierre and Rapid City Central were the lone teams with runners in attendance.

Peltier finished off the 4,000-meter race in 13:17.94 to claim a nearly 19-second win over second place Jebben Keyes of Pierre.

Patrick Woods was eighth in 14:20, while Alex Tiede, John Fisk, Josh Moore and Chauncy Goethals filled out spots 13 through 16.

On the girls’ side, Malsom’s win was a bit narrower than her counterpart Peltier’s. Malsom covered the 4K course in 16:04.44 to win by 9.14 seconds over Pierre’s Emily Mikkelsen.

“It was a good start to our season,” said Aberdeen girls’ coach Bill Martens. “It was good to get out and compete and see where we are.”

Shacey Burgess of Rapid City Central and Cortney Dowling of Pierre took the next two spots, and Aberdeen Central filled up seven of the remaining eight finishes in the field. Hailey Holland was fifth, followed by Kaylee Kappes, Lexi Weisbeck, Emma Ahlberg and Sami Shields.

Martens noted the Golden Eagles received strong efforts from the younger runners as well as the veterans.

“We had good leadership from our seniors,” Martens said. “Lexi and Kaylee ran very well for us today. Brooke and Hailey are just eighth-graders. We are real pleased with their progress.”

Mariah Fuchs interrupted the Central parade before Madisyn Waage and Sydney Wright rounded out the field.

Central will have its junior varsity running at the Roe Granger Invitational today at the Moccasin Creek Soccer Complex starting at 9:30 a.m. The varsity is scheduled to compete at the Brandon Valley Invitational on Thursday, which begins at 4:30 p.m.
