SALEM — The Garretson girls and West Central boys claimed top honors in the McCook Central-Montrose Invitational cross country meet, held Tuesday in Salem.
Garretson edged Mount Vernon-Plankinton 15-18 in the girls’ division. Ethan-Parkston was third at 33.
West Central’s Hanna Wahl won the girls’ race, clocking a 16:26.27 over the 4,000-meter course. Freeman’s Cailey Roth was second (16:41.41), followed by Lorna Gregerson of MVP (16:43.42).
West Central, led by the 1-2 finish of Derick Peters (16:23.86) and Ryan Titus (16:35.60), edged Garretson 10-12 in the boys’ division. Garretson claimed the next three places, led by John Liester’s 16:55.95 clocking over the 5,000-meter course. Ethan-Parkston’s Nick Zolnowsky was the top area finisher, placing ninth in 17:31.54.

NORTH SIOUX CITY — The Beresford girls and Sioux Falls Christian boys claimed top honors at the Dakota Valley Invitational, held Tuesday in North Sioux City.
Beresford edged Canton 24-27 in the girls’ division. Dakota Valley was third at 47.
Canton’s Halie McMains won the girls’ race, clocking a 15:32.1 over the 4,000-meter course. Beresford’s Ashlynn Atwood finished second in 15:35.5, followed by Lennox’s Maisey Bainbridge (15:45.2).
Sioux Falls Christian ran away with the boys’ race, an 18-35 victory over Beresford. Lennox was third at 46.
Elk Point-Jefferson’s Hunter Paulsen went 2-2 on the season, beating S.F. Christian’s Caleb DeWeerd by nearly a minute for top honors. Paulsen finished the 5,000-meter course in 15:32.2, with DeWeerd second in 16:27.6 and Beresford’s Mike Erlandson third in 16:28.6.
