The course was different, but the results were the same for a pair of cross country standouts and their respective teams in Ipswich on Saturday.

Just five days after winning individual races to help their teams win titles as well, Cole Sargent of Miller and Macy Heinz of Ipswich accomplished the same feat during the Ipswich Invitational.

As he did Monday in Webster, Sargent won the boys’ race to power Miller to the team crown, while Heinz repeated her Webster performance by winning the girls’ race and leading Ipswich to the girls’ team championship. Ipswich had the top three runners in the field to record a perfect score of 6.

Aberdeen Roncalli, on the strength of a seventh-place finish from Noah Knapp, was third in the boys’ team standings. Aberdeen Christian, led by a third-place showing from Tucker Iwerks, was fifth.

Roncalli, which received a sixth-place finish from Isabel Litzen was fourth in the girls’ team points.

“I’m not disappointed with our places,” said Roncalli girls’ coach Lisa Peterson. “We have great competition. How lucky are we to get to run against that competition all the time?”

Peterson said one of the highlights of the day was the performance of Leah Norton, who finished 29th and showed major improvement on her time.

“I was really impressed with Leah Norton,” Peterson said. “We want her to be in that top 20 for conference.”

The Roncalli boys competed a bit shorthanded because of injuries and a runner taking the ACT.

“Those that did run, ran well,” said Roncalli boys’ coach Tim Baustian.

The coached pointed out the performance of Austin Cihak, who picked off numerous runners down the stretch to finish 16th.

“Austin Cihak had a tremendous day,” Baustian said. “He has a wrestling background and is a grinder. He really closed strong and jumped seven to eight spots in the last half of the race.”

The Christian boys continue to move their pack up in the field. Knights coach David Rohrbach cited the efforts of Ben Williams, who finished 20th in the field and lowered his time in the process.

“He ran one of the better races on our team,” Rohrbach said.

Aberdeen Christian once again dominated the boys’ JV race, claiming five of the top seven spots. The Roncalli girls had two of the top three finishers in the junior high division.

Both Christian and Roncalli will compete at Lee Park Thursday during the Roncalli Invitational.

“The guys will know the course,” Rohrbach said. “It will be nice to stick around here and run.”

Baustian said the runners should enjoy competing in front of a hometown crowd.

“I think the kids are excited to host it and just to get to run in front of more people,” he said.
