Aberdeen Central senior Tanner Peltier is getting big mileage from the 350-some miles he ran this summer.

He has won two of his first three cross-country meets, including the Al Sahli-Bob Salmi Invitational Friday in Aberdeen.

“It is all because of Coach (Greg) Murley and my parents,” Peltier said. “All are really good at keeping me going during the summer, and summer is where you have to put the work in to be successful in the fall. They were all good about supporting me and keeping me motivated. I started early and kept it up the whole summer. It helps me compete at a higher level, and hopefully it will pay off at the state meet.”

Peltier ran the 5,000-meter course at Lee Park Golf Course in 16 minutes, 36 seconds. Jebben Keyes of Pierre was second in 16:53. Earlier this season, Peltier won the Pierre Triangular, with Keyes finishing second. “I had great competition today, especially Jebben, who was right by me most of the way,” Peltier said. “It is good for both of us to run against each other. Plus, my whole team did really well today.”

Peltier, who was third at last week’s Brandon Valley Invitational,  said it was fun to run at home in Central’s only varsity meet in Aberdeen. “It was exciting because we had a lot of fans and support here today for our team. It was great.”

In the girls’ varsity 4,000-meter race, Pierre senior Rachel Propst won in 15:28.77. Her teammate Emily Mikkelsen was second (15:30.26) and Brooke Malsom of Aberdeen Central was third (15:32.89). Both Mikkelsen and Malsom are eighth-graders. Another Aberdeen eighth-grader, Hailey Holland, was fifth (15:56.94).

“I love running in Aberdeen,” Propst said. “They do such a good job of keeping the golf course in great shape for us to run on. Plus, it was just a beautiful day to run, nice and cool.”

Propst battled a hip injury this summer, and this was her first meet of the season. “I am really happy with how things went today,” she said. “I was breathing well, using good form and relaxing. But I really miss Hannah (Kastigar, a standout runner/swimmer who graduated this past spring from Aberdeen Central). We were race buddies, and I would have loved to have her here today.”

Malsom also has had a nice start to her cross-country season. She also won the Pierre Triangular and was sixth at the Brandon Valley Invitational.

“I felt good about my race today,” Malsom said. “I got a pretty good start today, sprinted as hard as I could and tried my best.  And we did really well as a whole team today. The season is going pretty well.”

Pierre won both divisions of the Aberdeen meet. The Governor girls scored 20 points, while Central was second with 38. In the boys’ division, Pierre totaled a 24 and Central a 33.

Both Central coaches were proud of their runners.

“We had a good team effort, and I am proud of the progress we are making,” said Aberdeen Central girls’ coach Bill Martens. “It is always good to run against Pierre. They were fourth at the state meet last year, and they have everyone back. They are a good measuring stick, and I was very pleased with our performance today. We are making progress and we are just focused on that. You can’t control what a Pierre or any other team is doing. You just have to take care of yourself. And for the most part, our kids are doing a good job of responding to that.”

Martens said the Central cross-country program really appreciates that Lee Park lets the teams run on their golf course. “It is a nice place to run, and it is so nice for seniors to have a home meet like this. We try to make it a special event for them. It was just a great day.”

Aberdeen Central boys’ coach Greg Murley added that it also has been a great week of training for his team and that the Central program got great news about its cross-country runners in the classroom. “We just got our team GPAs (grade-point averages) the other day, and our high-school boys had a 3.33 GPA and our high-school girls had a 3.63. We have busy kids in our program who are involved in a lot of different things, and we as coaches are excited to work with them. They are great kids.”

Not only did Peltier have a great race Friday, but so did his teammate and senior teammate Patrick Woods, who was fourth (17:35).

“I am happy with our team’s performance,” Murley said. “Our times at this meet came down from last year, and our start was better than it was last week. It is important to put yourself in a good position to race. We have some guys who are really getting after it. We also had a couple of freshmen who ran their first 5K race today, and I am really happy with them as well.”

The Central varsity teams will compete in the annual Clyde Cotton Invitational Sept. 20 in Huron.
