Grassrope, Coyle win WGPC titles
Lyman’s Iren Grassrope and Philip’s Ellie Coyle each claimed individual conference titles at the Great Western Plains meet in Philip on Wednesday.
Grassrope won the 5,000-meter boys race in a time of 18 minutes, 24 seconds to take first, and the Philip boys placed three runners in the top nine to win the team title.
Philip junior Garrett Snook clocked in at 18:33 to place second, followed by teammate Tristen Rush in fourth and Kruse Bierly ninth as the Scotties won the team title with 14 points to better Stanley County (21), Rapid City Christian (21) and Lyman (24.
On the girls’ side, Coyle led from start to finish to top Lyman’s Quinn Lulf and Stanley County’s Kelsey VanDenHemel. Coyle, who placed ninth at last year’s Class B state meet, ran the 4,000-meter girls course in 15:52.

Philip also took the girls team championship as Katlin Knutson and Josie Rush placed fourth and seventh, respectively. The Scotties took the team title with just 10 points over Rapid City Christian (21), Lyman (24), Kadoka Area (36) and Bennett County (38).
Robbinsdale hosting Rapid City Invite
Rapid City will be hosting the annual Rapid City Invitational cross country meet on Friday Robbinsdale Park beginning at 3 p.m.
The high school division features 32 teams from five states – South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. Meet results will be posted at http://www.athletic.net, search for Rapid City Invitational.
The Race Schedule is as follows:
• 3 p.m. — Varsity girls
• 3:30 p.m. — Varsity boys
• 4 p.m. — Junior varsity girls
• 4:30 p.m. — Junior varsity boys
• 5 p.m. — Middle school girls
• 5:30 p.m. — Middle school boys
BHSU volleyball home opener tonight
The Black Hills State volleyball team and first-year head coach Kristen Carmichael make their home debut Thursday night against New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m.
Black Hills State is 3-8 overall and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets won the opening match of the RMAC season over Western State 3-2 before falling to Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis last weekend.
Senior Holly Hamlin ranks second in the RMAC averaging 1.34 blocks per set and has totaled 43 overall, while senior Meghan Sipe has 101 kills on the year, an average of 2.73 per set.
