Aberdeen Christian runner wins at Groton

An Aberdeen Christian runner made the most of his opportunities on Monday in Groton.

Tucker Iwerks took first place in the boys’ division at the Groton Invitational cross country meet. Makayla Zirbel of Waubay-Summit claimed first in the girls’ race. No team points were kept at the event.

“Tucker ran a pretty good race,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach. “I was pleased with how he ran.”

Rohrbach said that the Knights received a good effort from Ezra Aderhold as well, with a top 15 finish.

“It was one of his better races of the year,” said Rohrbach. “He really came out strong. He and Ben Williams both finished at about the same time. We are trying to close the gap between Tucker and our second and third runners as we get down the stretch.”

Aberdeen Christian’s Kiana Lundeen finished 21st in the girls’ race. The meet had just 42 total varsity runners and was a small meet compared to what the Knights had been seeing this season.

“It was probably the smallest meet we’ve been to all year,” said Rohrbach.

Next up for the Knights is the Lake Region Conference meet at Ipswich on Oct. 8.
