Aberdeen Central’s Tanner Peltier etched his name into the school record books on Saturday.

The senior became just the fourth runner in school history to win the boys’ championship during the Eastern South Dakota Conference Cross-country Meet at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Peltier, who won in a time of 16:47.84, joins former Golden Eagles Nate Trebilcock, Matt Walberg and Josh Wilson as ESD champions.

“He ran a really great race,” said Central boys’ coach Greg Murley of Peltier, noting that the senior is a prime example of how “if you work hard and have a great attitude, things will work out for you. Everything that he’s gotten he’s certainly earned.”

Brandon Valley swept the team titles, winning by the boys’ division by 16 points over Brookings, and the girls’ bracket by 14 points over Yankton.

Aberdeen Central finished third in boys’ team points, and fourth in the girls’ standings.

Peltier trailed early in the race before pressing the pace with about a mile left in the race.

“He wore those guys down,” Murley said.

The Eagles had three members among the top 20 in the boys’ race. Patrick Woods was 15th and Alex Tiede finished 18th.

Murley noted that it was the second-straight season that Woods was all-conference.

“We don’t have a bunch of kids that are two-time all-conference kids, either,” Murley pointed out. “That’s another example of a kid that just works hard every day.”

The Central girls were led by Brook Malsom, who finished ninth. Teammate Hailey Holland was 16th.

“I thought our effort was great,” said Central girls’ coach Bill Martens. “It was good to see Brook Malsom have a solid race.”

Malsom, just an eighth-grader, is now a two-time all-conference performer.

The meet marked the first of three straight meets on the same course for Central. The Eagles, who had already run at Huron earlier this season, return to Huron for the Five Star Invitational on Thursday before heading back to Broadland Creek for the state meet on Saturday, Oct. 25.

“That’s just the way the schedule fell this year,” Martens said, noting that it was Huron’s turn to host the ESD and the state meet. “It’s kind of our home away from home, so to speak.”
