Carper, Black and Wirth Shine

MINNEAPOLIS — Carly Carper broke her own 60-meter dash record and Jazzelena Black and Mary Wirth scored wins as the South Dakota State women's track and field team competed at the Jack Johnson Classic Saturday at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse. 

Carper shaved .03 of a second off her record, posting a time of 7.55 in the final en route to a third-place finish. Friday, the junior placed third in a field of 64 athletes in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.99. She also scored a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a mark of 17-8.75. 

Jazzelena Black took home the triple jump meet title with a mark of 39-4. Friday, she placed third in the long jump with a distance of 18-1.50. With a height of 5-11.25, Mary Wirth stretched her winning streak in the high jump to three-straight meets. 

South Dakota State's assault on the 600-meter run top-10 list continued at the Jack Johnson Classic. Laura Lawton became the sixth Jackrabbit this season to write her name in the school record book in this event, claiming ninth with a time of 1:41.18.

Jessica Eibs scored two top-10 finishes at the Jack Johnson Classic, placing ninth in the mile run (5:03.25) and eighth in the 600-meter run (1:40.34). Jenna Grossenburg scored a seventh-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:11.06 while Jenna Stephens claimed a sixth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 37-3.

Friday, en route to a 13th-place finish, Ashley Odegaard shaved .01 of a second off her personal best in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.73, the ninth-best in school history. In the women's unseeded shot put, Trisha Sumption claimed second (44-4.75) and Silvia Zanini took fifth (39-11.25).

The Jackrabbits return to action at the Frank Sevigne-Husker Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. Feb. 6-7 and the USD Open Feb. 7 in Vermillion, S.D.
