Jacks Compete at Summit League Championships

The South Dakota State men's and women's track and field teams travel to Fargo, N.D. for the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday and Saturday. Events start at 9:30 a.m. both days.

At the 2013-14 Summit League Championships

With 95 points, the men's team finished third at the Summit League Championships last year. The women's team totaled 97 points en route to a fourth-place finish.

Joel Reichow was South Dakota State's lone individual champion, claiming the 5,000-meter run title with a time of 14:39.42. He became only the second Jackrabbit to win an individual distance event at the Summit League indoor championship meet, joining Trent Lusignan, who won the 5,000-meter run the year before. South Dakota State won the women's distance relay in 2009-10 and the men's distance relay in 2011-12.

Carper Cruising Towards History

Carly Carper has owned the top 60-meter dash time in the Summit League for the majority of the season. The junior won this event at five of the seven meets she competed at and also broke her own school record four times. She is the only Jackrabbit to post a time faster than 7.60 and lowered her record to 7.49 at the SDSU Indoor Invitational.

If Carper, one of the favorites, wins the 60-meter dash at the Summit League Indoor Championships, she will be the first Jackrabbit on either team to accomplish the feat. No Jackrabbit has won the 60-meter dash at an indoor conference meet, though three men - John Albertie (1991, '92), Edmund Estephane (1994) and Jason Harris (1998) - won the since-retired 55-meter dash back in the North Central Conference days. Carper, who ranks first in the Summit League in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.46, will also have the chance to become the first Jackrabbit since 2009 to win the indoor 200-meter dash title.

Wirth Looking For Win #24

Mary Wirth already owns 23 individual titles in the high jump but a win at this year's indoor championship would be particularly sweet. The senior owns three Summit League outdoor titles (2011, '12, '14) but only one indoor crown (2012). She placed second at the indoor championship meet twice, being edged by an inch in 2014 and by 1.25 inches in 2011. Wirth's school-record height of 6-0 has led the Summit League all season; she is also one of only 18 athletes to clear 6-0 in the NCAA this season.

Reichow Raring to Defend Title

The only defending Summit League indoor champion on the roster, Reichow is also the only Jackrabbit to appear in the Summit League's top five in three different events. The junior ranks second in the mile run, third in the 5,000-meter run and fifth in the 3,000-meter run. At the Jack Johnson Classic, he became the first Jackrabbit since 2012 to post a top-10 school time in the mile run, claiming 10th all-time with a time of 4:10.47. He also holds the sixth-fastest 3,000-meter time in school history at 8:23.39.

Ary and Black Dominating the Jumps

Jeremiah Ary and Jazzelena Black have combined to win 12 individual titles in the long and triple jumps this season. Ary won the triple jump five times and the long jump once, while Black won the long jump three times and the triple jump twice.

With a distance of 40-3.50, Black set a school record in the triple jump at the Jim Emmerich/Alumni Invitational. She also holds third place in school history in the long jump with a mark of 18-11.25. Ary currently ranks fifth in the triple jump (48-8.25) and seventh in the long jump (23-5.25) in South Dakota State history.
