Storylines• Augustana men's and women's indoor track and field team will compete at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/ US Bank Indoor Track & Field Championships on Thursday and Friday Feb. 26-27 in Mankato, Minn.
• Both teams were selected by the NSIC coaches to finish in the top-three of the league with the men picked second and the women slotted third.
• The Augustana men's squad finished second last season, while the women took third.
• The Vikings were last in action this past weekend with four men competing at the Nebraska Tune-Up and a group traveling to Vermillion, S.D. for the USD Twilight.
• The women's distance medley relay team traveled to Minneapolis, Minn. for the Parents Day Open, hosted by the University of Minnesota this past Saturday.
• The women's team used a big weekend to move up 24 spots to enter the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association top 25 for the first time this season checking in at the No. 14 spot.
• The Vikings return several key components to both teams for the 2015 season, including several All-NSIC performers.
• Augustana will close out their indoor track season traveling to Birmingham, Ala. for the NCAA Championships on March. 13-14.
Yak set new school record at the Nebraska Tune-Up, while three hit qualifying marks at USD •
Paul Yak set a new school record with a top mark in the men's 5,000-meter run provisionally qualifying with a time of 14:29.29, which ranks 15th in the nation and first in the NSIC.
• At the USD Twilight,
CJ Ham dominated the shot put with a third place finish provisionally qualifying with a heave of 16.11 meters (52 feet, 10.25 inches), which currently ranks 31st in the nation, and second in the NSIC.
• In the 60-meter hurdles,
Ryan Heuer provisionally qualified with a time of 8.15 to finish second-place. With this mark, Heuer ranks third in the NSIC and 25th in the nation.
• On the women's side,
Kelsey Kaufmann took third place in the high jump provisionally qualifying with a clearance of 1.73 meters (5 feet, 8 inches). Kaufmann ranks second in the NSIC, behind teammate
Bree Woelber, and ninth in the nation.
Women's DMR provisionally qualifies at the University of Minnesota• The women's squad of
Emma Anderson,
Charissa Etrheim,
Kayla Mescher, and
Leah Seivert provisionally qualified with a time of 11:55.63 for a second-place finish. With this mark, the women's DMR team moved up two spots to currently sit 11th in the nation, previously beating their time at the MSU-Ted Nelson Invitational on Feb. 7 by two seconds.
Yak earns NSIC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honors• Augustana College senior
Paul Yak was named Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week in a release from the conference on Tuesday.
• Yak traveled to Lincoln, Neb. where he competed in the 5,000-meter run at the prestigious Nebraska Tune-Up. A native of Storm Lake, Iowa Yak set a new school record taking the top mark in the men's 5,000-meter run provisionally qualifying with a time of 14:29.29, which ranks 15th in the nation and first in the NSIC.
• Yak was selected as the men's track athlete to watch for the Augustana track and field team now holding the 5,000-meter record indoors to go with his 10,000-meter record outdoors.
• This is Yak's third career athlete of the week accolades, and first for the indoor track and field season. Yak collected his first accolade on May 1, 2012, followed by March 31, 2014 both earned in the outdoor season.
The staff• In his 12th season as the head coach,
Tracy Hellman enters 2015 with hopes of another award-filled season.
• Hellman has directed 93 All-Americans in his combined duties of leading the track and field teams as well as the
successful cross country teams.
• With four individual national championships and a relay title in 2012, Hellman has also earned 19 coach of the year
honors, including the 2011 national women's cross country coach of the year after leading his squad to the first national championship in program history.
• Assistant coach
Greg Binstock enters his third season as the lead assistant.
• Directing sprinters and jumpers, Binstock helped Henrik Holmberg to two All-American finishes in multi-events in the 2012-13 season and directed 12 national qualifiers to nine All-American performances.
• Graduate Assistants
Scott Tanis (distance), and
Laquone Robinson (hurdles) round out the coaching staff.
