Katelyn Tuohy Breaks Sophomore Class Record In 1500m

It's been nearly three weeks since Katelyn Tuohy's disappointing fourth-place finish at the Millrose Games girls mile on Feb. 3.

And the North Rockland (NY) High sophomore likely hasn't forgotten about it. But a lot has happened since then, and importantly, she's continued to race.

On Wednesday, the recent Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year secured another record on her way to New Balance Nationals Indoor, scoring the sophomore national class record in the 1500m at the Section 1 State Qualifier with a time of 4:23.91.

Tuohy will race the 2-mile and DMR with North Rockland at nationals and may potentially compete in the SMR, according to her coach, Brian Diglio.

Entered in the 1000m and 3000m heading into the state qualifier, Tuohy decided on focusing on the 1500m, needing to finish within the top three places to qualify for the state indoor championships. The overall time was New York's No. 3 of all-time and the US No. 12 all-time effort.

Tuohy broke Mary Cain's old mark of 4:24.25, which she achieved in 2012 with Bronxville.

Just four days after finishing fourth at the Millrose high school girls mile, Tuohy accepted the Gatorade national runner of the year award near her hometown of North Rockland. She was surprised, coincidentally, by Cain herself.

Since then, Tuohy has stayed the course, competing at the Section 1 Class A Champs on Feb. 10 in the 1000m and 1500m. She focused exclusively on the 1500m on Wednesday, qualifying for the New York state indoor championships on Mar. 3.
