Nike Cross Nationals has captivated the world of high school cross country running. Seasons are bigger and have more meaning. The glory associated with being a part of the largest and most prolific prep cross country event in the world motivates teams and athletes to take the next step, the step towards greatness.

Across the country there exists nine regions. Within each region, top teams compete through head to head battle. At the conclusion of every season, top teams square off at these Region Championship national super-meets! Prior to this excitement there are Pre-Region Championship events. Teams square off for an in-season feel of the course and environment.

Last years fifth place Heartland Championship finisher Edina, MN, broke away and dominated with 34 team points. They finished just ahead of  Sioux Falls Roosevelt, SD with 56 points. The individual championship went to Rapid City Central's own Tony Smorgiewicz who traversed the 5000 meter coruse in 16:31.03. He finished slightly ahead of runnerup Michael Ellenberger who finished in 16:31.52.

Featuring the 2008 Heartland Region Championship runnerup Sioux Falls Roosevelt, SD, this event would seem a warm-up for Sioux Falls. Sioux Falls was dominant, winning with 19 team points. Led by NXN Heartland Region 7th place finisher Seanna Kautz's individual victory in 19:03.70, the ladies would follow in very closely. Finishing 2,3,6,7 to round out the top five the ladies from Sioux Falls mean business.
