Gorman and Smoragiewicz finished 4th and 1st respectively at Nike Heartland Cross Country Championships, qualifying to compete in Nike Cross Country National Championships where Gorman placed 30th and Smoragiewicz 9th. In addition, Smoragiewicz placed 3rd at the Foot Locker Midwest Championships in a time of 15:00 and then went on to compete in Foot Locker Nationals where he also finished 3rd in a time of 15:16.
Despite running for rival high schools, Gorman and Smoragiewicz spend a great deal of time training together as members of the Rapid City Racers Swim Team, where they have been teammates since elementary school. Both are also national level triathletes and members of Z3, a high performance triathlon team based in the midwest.
