The Fit Runner: A new series from MileSplit




We are proud to introduce you to the "The Fit Runner," a new series from MileSplit. The first show will be published tomorrow (Friday, September 16, 2011).

Each month we will publish a new fitness or wellness related topic geared towards the runner. The show will be presented by an expert in the field in focus for that month, with special guests that you may be familiar with including athletes, celebrities, and just generally engaging people! The goal of each presentation will be to address fitness and wellness issues pertaining to YOU the active runner--topics will include a variety of wellness disciplines from health, nutrition, psychology, injury prevention, recovery, and training.
 
Our newly formed MileSplit Medical Advisory Board consists of four medical professionals (Dr. Gideon J. Lewis, Dr. Bryan Reuss, Dr. Lisa Barkley, and Dr. Laura Podschun) with diverse backgrounds and extensive experience treating and working with high school athletes. We will strive to provide you with educational as well as entertaining segments. Wencourage any feedback as we continue to improve this new facet of MileSplit. We hope you enjoy!

Meet The Doctors

Gideon J. Lewis, D.P.M., FACFAS

Board Certified in Reconstructive Rearfoot / Ankle Surgery
Board Certified in Foot Surgery.

He completed his Podiatric Surgical Residency at Florida Hospital with extensive training in Advanced Foot and Ankle Surgery.  He is also a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons.  

He received his Doctorate degree at the California College of Podiatric Medicine, training at the University of California at San Francisco School of Medicine teaching hospitals.

Dr. Lewis earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology and Microbiology at the University of Central Florida (UCF).

He has a specialist interest in sports related injuries, especially running injuries.  His patient list includes current and former athletes from the NBA, MLB, NFL, PGA, X-Games, and NCAA.  

In 2010, Dr. Lewis was selected as the first recipient for the "Rising Star Award" presented by the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.  The faculty and administration selected Dr. Lewis from a pool of over ten thousand alumni for this award, because of his outstanding work and achievements within UCF and the community.

Dr. Lewis remains very active in the Central Florida community.  He currently serves as the Director for the UCF Pre-Medical Surgical Internship Program.   Dr. Lewis is also a faculty member of UCF College of Medicine.  He is an attending physician for Florida Hospital's Foot and Ankle Surgery Residency, training surgical residents.  

 In 2010 Dr. Lewis was asked to serve on the Board of Directors, along with Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic), for the Kerosene Lamp Foundation, Adonal Foyle's (Orlando Magic) non-profit organization.

As a former NCAA Division 1A athlete, Gideon enjoys staying active by participating in his favorite outdoor sports: tennis, running, and barefoot water-skiing.  His other interests include traveling, cooking, and spending time with family.

**Of note, Dr. Lewis is a co-founder and co-developer for Drink Chia!, a super-food health beverage company which has launched this year!

Bryan L. Reuss, M.D.

Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery
Board Certified in Sports Medicine
Specializing in Sports Medicine, Knee and Shoulder Surgery

Raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Dr. Reuss attended the University of Kansas where he earned his B.A. degree in Biology. He earned his M.D. degree with Honors from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. While in medical school, he was elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and served as class president for all four years of medical school.

Dr. Reuss completed his Orthopaedic Surgery training at Orlando Regional Healthcare System. He was chosen among all residents in all programs as Resident of the Year for 2004-2005. Following his residency, he pursued additional training in Sports Medicine by completing an Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship with the University of Cincinnati/Wellington Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine group. While there, he served as Assistant Team Physician to the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals and the University of Cincinnati's football and basketball programs, as well as a physician to the ATP Masters Series of the Professional Tennis Tour. He also serves as a physician for Cirque du Soleil, USA Rugby, and USA Boxing. Dr. Reuss is also a team physician for the newly formed United Football League and College Football's East-West Shrine Game as well as the PGA's Arnold Palmer Invitational.

With dedication to sports medicine advancements, Dr. Reuss has published literature in Orthopaedic journals and continues to work on research projects in the field of Sports Medicine. In addition, he has lectured to distinguished audiences on numerous topics related to Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is also a clinical faculty member for University of Central Florida's Medical School and Nova Southeastern University's Physician Assistant Program, as well as Orlando Health's Orthopaedic Residency Program.

Dedicated to our community, Dr. Reuss serves as a team physician and works with the schools in our sports medicine network, including Boone HS Braves, University HS Cougars, Timber Creek HS Wolves, Oak Ridge HS Pioneers, Hagerty HS Huskies, Lake Brantley HS Patriots, Lyman HS Greyhounds, Lake Howell HS Silver Hawks, Oviedo HS Lions, Winter Springs HS Bears, The First Academy Royals, Trinity Preparatory School Saints, and the Seminole Community College Raiders. He is also a team physician to the Central Florida Strikers soccer team and the Florida Soccer Alliance.

Dr. Reuss is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He is Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, specializing in sports medicine, knee, and shoulder injuries

Laura Podschun, DPT, OCS. CSCS

Dr Podschun attended the Honors Program at the University of Florida, earning her BS in Microbiology.  She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Cum Laude from UF.  She earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, graduating Magna Cum Laude and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Arcadia University, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Practicing in orthopedic physical therapy for over 20 years, Dr Podschun specializes in lower extremity biomechanics, especially as it relates to sports medicine injuries.  As the Senior Manager of Clinical and Market for Florida Hospital Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr Podschun helps guide the clinical education and treatment approaches for outpatient care.  She manages the post-professional physical therapy residency programs for Florida Hospital as well as being the primary instructor for the lower extremity rotation of the orthopedic PT residency. 

Dr Podschun has published literature in Sports Medicine journals and continues to work on research projects in the field of Orthopedic Sports Medicine.  She has lectured extensively at local and state conferences on numerous topics related Orthopedic Sports Medicine.  Dr Podschun has served as an assistant professor for the physical therapy assistant program at Seminole State College and adjunct instructor for the physical therapy program at University of Central Florida. 

Being a runner herself for over 20 years, Dr Podschun is very active in the running community of Central Florida.  She leads running groups for Track Shack’s Marathonfest training program, and participates/coordinates multiple screening events for runners at local races and the Track Shack store, as well as assisting with medical coverage for the Walt Disney World marathon.  Dr Podschun has run numerous marathons and lists Big Sur, London and Boston marathons as well as the Bolder Boulder 10k as some of her favorite races.

Dr Podschun is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association.  She is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner and is Board Certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy.

Lisa Barkley MD, FAAFP

Dr. Barkley is a board certified family physician with subspecialty board certification in adolescent and sports medicine.  She has over 15 years of accomplishment-oriented experience in the clinical, administrative and educational sphere of medicine and higher education.  Her focus is patient centered, quality care and health care education, especially in adolescent populations impacted by health disparities.  She has extensive insight and knowledge regarding adolescent and youth health choices and serves as an advocate and tactical contributor to health care education.

She is currently the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine.  Prior to this appointment she was the first Associate Vice President for Health and Wellness, was the founding Dean of the College of Health and Public Policy and the Medical Director for University Health Services and Head Team Physician at Delaware State University.  She is a proven leader who collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders including University faculty and administrators, representatives from federal, state and local government agencies as well as with institutions in the higher education community.  Through service-leadership, she has created a comprehensively dynamic, multidisciplinary, community-based mission and vision for the College.  She has also been instrumental in advancing the quality of student health services as well as provided acute planning and structural guidance for the new Sports Medicine Center that provides first response care for more than three hundred University student athletes.  Prior to assuming the deanship in 2004, Dr. Barkley served as Education Faculty in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, DE.  In this position, Dr. Barkley assumed several clinical and administrative roles including Medical Director for the Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine practice, for several area high school based wellness centers, and for juvenile corrections for the State of Delaware. From 1997 to 2000, she was the Director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship program and has been a team physician for youth sports, high school, all of the NCAA divisions and the U.S. Figure Skating Association. 

Dr.  Barkley received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Georgetown University in 1987 and her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1992.    She completed her family medicine residency at Montgomery Hospital in Norristown, PA in 1995 and her fellowships in adolescent and sports medicine at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, DE in 1997.    She holds medical licenses in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Georgia. 

Dr. Barkley has received many honors during her career. She was elected by her peers as Chief Resident at Montgomery Hospital Residency program in 1994, received the Silver Award for Clinical Excellence at Christiana Care Health System in 2002 and was elected by her peers in 2000 and 2009 as Top Doctor in Adolescent Medicine by Delaware Today magazine.  She also received the honor of fellowship in the American Academy of Family Physicians. 

Dr. Barkley has published in peer reviewed journals, has written medical book chapters, and has received grant funding to implement domestic and international health related programs.   She has also been a guest on medical topics at WHYY TV and Clear Channel Radio.
