Sooners Sweep XC Opener Press Release Sep 04, 2007

\"\"

TULSA, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma men's and women's cross country teams swept the competition at the Hurricane Festival Saturday morning.

Led by Rob Sorrell and All-American Jessica Eldridge, the Sooner men and women dominated at the Mohawk Park course.

OU scored 24 points to win the men's team title over Oklahoma State (37) and Tulsa (65). The Sooner women tallied 21 points to Tulsa's 35 and Oklahoma State's 79.

"It's difficult to have a comprehensive strategy for the opening race of the cross country season," OU head coach Martin Smith said. "The preseason is so short that you depend on the endurance training the athletes developed on their own during the summer to get them by for a while.

"I just told them to run as fast as they could as far as they could."

Sorrell defended his individual race title, winning Saturday's four-mile run in 19 minutes, 34 seconds (4:54 mile pace). His run was a 49-second improvement over his time from last year, when he became the first OU freshman in over a quarter century to win his debut race.

OU newcomer Tony Clement (19:47) edged Oklahoma State's Brian Gosnell (19:48) for second place. OU sophomore Jon Grey (19:50) was fourth.

Kevin Schwab (19:57) and Matt Grey (20:07) took eighth and ninth to complete OU's scoring.

Eldridge (10:46) completed the women's two-mile run 14 seconds ahead of teammate Catherine Odell (11:00).

Jessica Engel (11:19) and Kelly Waters (11:22) were third and fourth, respectively, as a quartet of Sooner women were first to cross the finish line.

Bison Eighth in Preseason Poll Press Release Aug 28, 2007

Oklahoma Baptist will start the cross country season in September as the eighth-ranked men’s team in the NAIA. Due to a regional ranking snafu, no NAIA Region VI women’s teams, including OBU, were in the preseason poll, which was released Wednesday, Aug. 22. The Bison were ranked 10th in the final regular season poll of 2006. For the second consecutive year, the OBU men made the final rankings look bad. Last year, the Bison won the region crown and dropped from seventh to 10th in the NAIA. OBU rebounded with a fourth-place finish at the national meet. This year’s squad returns four of the seven runners from last year’s national meet team, including Lance Goodwin, Michael Elizondo, Justin Stroup and Josiah White.  Added to the mix are state high school champion Josh Doyel and All-Stater Brandon Dickinson.

The varsity cross country season begins Sept. 15 with a trip to Joplin, Mo., for the Southern Stampede.

\"\" NORMAN, Okla. -- Bobby Lockhart, 24, a former standout distance runner at the University of Wisconsin and high school national athlete of the year, was hired as an assistant track and field coach by the University of Oklahoma today.

"Bobby joined us as a volunteer between seasons," Smith said, "and demonstrated a distinctive leadership that the other assistants and I believe will make him a great coach. His presence among our team always translated into positive outcomes, so I am very pleased to reward him with this position."

Lockhart helped the Badgers win a national cross country championship in 2005 after finishing runner-up three consecutive years. He was also part of 11 Big Ten championship-winning cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams.

Twice an NCAA All-American at Wisconsin, Lockhart earned recognition once each in cross country and outdoor track (10,000-meter run). He was twice named to the All-Big Ten Conference Cross Country Team.

Manlius is the top-rated team in the newly formed New York Region, while Carroll XC Club of Texas, which placed sixth at last year’s NTN meet, is top rated in the South Region. Colts Neck of New Jersey, fourth at last year’s NTN meet as a wild-card entry from the Northeast Region, tops this year’s Northeast Region poll. The Bison finished with 77 points, 19 ahead of runner-up Dickinson State at 58.

The win was a hard one to come by, as OBU does not have its own track due to construction.
