CLASS A GIRLS PREVIEW: BATTLES GALORE

By Rich Winter

Sioux Falls Christian's, Miranda Velgersdyk is going to win the 200 meters at the state track meet. Custer's Tori Glazer is going to win the 800 meters at the state track meet.

I hope these two line up in the 400 meters and duke it out.

Hey, this is Rich Winter from Mission, South Dakota and this is the second in a six-part, South Dakota state track preview.

If you're looking for photos from the 2013 state meet, or want to look forward to some quality images for 2014, make sure you check out kernit.zenpholio.com - Kernit Grimshaw one of the best sports photographers in South Dakota and he'll have hundreds if not thousands of photos from the state meet on his site.

Allright, let's break down the events at the state meet.

100 meters: Howell of Belle Fourche posted that 12.4 pretty early in the season but she got handled pretty well by the AA sprinters at the Sturgis meet a week ago. So many with close times, I'm gonna go with Heusinkveld from Bon Homme to win it.

100m Dash - 12.80
1. Howell, Shayla 12.40 Belle Fourche
2. Ulberg, Erica 12.40 Milbank
3. Bertram, Keely 12.50 Elk Point-Jefferson
4. Heusinkveld, Anna 12.50 Bon Homme
5. Lewis, Maria 12.50 West Central
6. VanDeBerg, Mara 12.50 Garretson
7. Engbrecht, Mandy 12.70 Madison
8. Kirsch, Kassidy 12.70 St. Thomas More
9. Opdahl, Sam 12.70 Hamlin
10. Vandermeer, Ashley 12.70 Deubrook Area

200 meters: Velgersdyk is the class of the field here. Her top notch speed at this distance and her ability to sustain it through the finish leads her to a big win. I like Howell to finish second at this distance.

200m Dash - 26.90
1. Velgersdyk, Miranda 25.70 SF Christian
2. Howell, Shayla 26.00 Belle Fourche
3. Rud, Olivia 26.30 Madison
4. Vandermeer, Ashley 26.30 Deubrook Area
5. Bertram, Keely 26.50 Elk Point-Jefferson
6. VanDeBerg, Mara 26.50 Garretson
7. Heusinkveld, Anna 26.60 Bon Homme
8. Smidt, Stacy 26.60 SF Christian
9. Zomermaand, Shelby 26.60 SF Christian
10. Oostra, Jordyn 26.70 SF Christian

400 meters: Seriously, this is the race of the meet for me. Glazer is more of an 800 and a 1600 runner, and she may not even run this race if Custer stacks her on a relay somewhere, but I wanna see this race. Velgersdyk is one of the best athletes to come out of the Class A ranks in quite some time. Glazer finished pretty highly at a national 800 meet last season and she's shown to be quite capable over the one lap oval. (Editor's Note: Sorry, Rich, this race isn't going to happen!)

That said: Velgersdyk is just too tough and gritty not to get this race.

800m Dash - 1:01.00

6. Smidt, Stacy 1:00.40 SF Christian

1600 meter: This one could be a barn burner. With no offense to the girls that will finish 4th-8th this one comes down to Streff, Lavin and Glazer.

Streff has the fastest time but that came earlier in the season.

Lavin is only an 8th grader but she's the state cross country champ.

Glazer is also an 8th grader and she's the defending champ.

   Glazer gets the win!
