Distance depth propels Stevens girls into first-day lead - South Dakota AA track roundup

By Rich Winter

If the Rapid City Stevens girls hope to add another girls state track championship to an already crowded trophy case, no doubt Steven's talented distance crew will need to score big points.

The Lady Raiders didn't disappoint on day one of the South Dakota State track meet.

The 4x800 squad of Jamie Schweiss, Kendra Dykstra, Emily Person and Renae Dykstra won an early gold medal when the quartet cranked out a 9:20 in the morning session to easily outdistance RC Central and Yankton.

In the afternoon session, the Raiders came through again when senior Tamara Gorman endured the warm weather and the charge of Yankton standout, Annie Kruse to win the 3200 meters in 11:07. The Raiders scored 17 points in the 3200 meter run as Emily Person finished 3rd and Jessica Bailey finished 8th.

In the 800 final, Sturgis athlete, Jacob Simmons won his first state title with an impressive run that broke 1:56.

Caleb Diggs of Douglas was a surprise winner in the AA 3200. The time wasn't fast, 9:44 but the result was good.

3200 Finals 1 Diggs, Caleb 12 Douglas 9:44.14 10 2 Schroeder, Nathan 11 Sioux Falls Lincoln 9:44.42 8 3 Haaland, Connor 11 Rapid City Stevens 9:44.46 6 4 Cowman, Brice 12 Yankton 9:45.75 5 5 Lamer, Justice 11 Brookings 9:48.41 4 6 Poston, Mark 11 Rapid City Stevens 9:52.73 3 7 Urtusuastegui, Jesus 11 SF Roosevelt 9:54.53 2 8 Lindner, Tiegen 10 SF O'Gorman 9:55.92 1

Roosevelt sprinter David Mulbah looked awfully good in the prelims of the 100 and 200 and Pierre qualified thee athletes into the 110 hurdles finals.

Field events:

Discus: Sioux Falls Roosevelt had three of the top eight throwers with Jack Lembcke winning the event with a toss of 179'9"

High jump: Yankton athlete, JJ Hejna cleared 6-feet-8.25 to outduel Roosevelt's Mulbah who cleared 6-feet-6

Long jump: The dominance by Roosevelt continued in the long jump where junior Taryn Christion got out to 23'1.5"

Saturday could be a very eventful day on the track and in the field in the boy's division. Roosevelt scored very well in Friday's field events but Sioux Falls Washington has sprinters and hurdlers and good relays all over the place.
