Class AA: Lincoln boys win first state title in 25 years; Rapid City Stevens claims girls crown

Given that Lincoln track coach Jim Jarovski also serves as an assistant football coach, he couldn't help but draw similarities between the Patriots' state football title last fall and the track crown his boys captured Saturday.

In both instances, the Pats lost a key member of the team to injury (this weekend it was standout distance runner Will Lauer, out with a lower leg ailment), but the depth of both squads answered the bell in true championship fashion.

"That last week we lost (quarterback) Connor Burchill and had to have guys step up," said Jarovski. "I said (on Thursday), 'I need you guys to do the same,' and we had that. Nathan Schroeder stepping up in the distance and Matt Wagner getting a couple points in the hurdles and Adam Belhaj and Free Bump – all the guys just stepped it up."

The collective uprising translated to 118 team points and the Patriots' first Class AA state track and field title since 1989. Roosevelt finished runner-up with 95 points, while Brandon Valley (851/2), Rapid City Stevens (59) and Watertown (581/2) rounded out the top five.

Belhaj led the championship charge with wins in the 200-meter (22.61) and 400-meter (48.39) dashes while also anchoring a first-place 1,600 relay effort with teammates Ned Sudbeck, Zarek Kahn and Isaac Bindert. His winning 400 time tied a meet record set by Brandon Valley's Cam Holmes, who led most of the way on Saturday until Belhaj found another gear.

"I felt good the whole race and just tried to follow Cam as much as I could, then that last 50 meters I saw him ahead of me and was like, 'I can't let him (stay) ahead of me' and I came out with a win," said the Lincoln senior. "I'm honestly humbled that I got the opportunity to run against somebody like that."

The win in the 200 went down to the wire as well, with Belhaj edging Roosevelt's David Mulbah by 0.16 in the final head-to-head clash between the city rivals.

"David's always a good competitor and we like to have our fun before and after races," said Belhaj. "It was kind of juicy on the track getting ready for it."

Mulbah claimed the 100 title with a time of 10.8, but that would be the extent of the Rough Riders' championship success on the track as Roosevelt's 400- and 800-meter relays were disqualified, further opening the door for the Patriots.

Holmes anchored Brandon Valley's championship 800 relay, which won in 1:28.85, while the Washington boys stood atop the podium twice as Dan Marlette won the 300 hurdles in 39.31 and the medley relay team won with a time of 3:37.41.

Roosevelt senior Jack Lembcke added to his trophy case as he defended his shot put title with a toss of 60-3/4. That effort, coupled with his title defense in the discus on Friday, earned him boys field MVP honors, though he fell short of the state record he was shooting for.

"I couldn't piece anything together," said the University of Washington recruit. "I really wanted to throw 66 or above. I was ready for it. Nothing came together. You have days like that – I didn't think it was going to be today, but it was."

Washington senior Michaela Mayer also went out on top with back-to-back shot put titles, winning with a heave of 44-111/4. The University of Minnesota recruit had earlier this season pulled off the second-best shot put in South Dakota history at 46-91/2.

"I'm pretty excited about that," said Mayer. "I'll be able to have my name on South Dakota (record boards) for a while. Hopefully I can go to Minnesota and do some things, too."

In all likelihood, Mayer couldn't have asked for a better senior campaign as she collected a discus title on Friday to go with state championships in softball and basketball.

"I wanted to end them all with a win," she said. "Overall, it's been a really good year."

The Washington girls finished outside the top five as Rapid City Stevens powered its way to a 16th state title in 19 years with 101 points. Rapid City Central (821/2) finished runner-up, followed by Pierre (67), Yankton (59) and Brandon Valley (571/2).

Senior Tamara Gorman was the lone individual champion for the Raiders, winning the 3,200 on Friday, but Stevens flexed its muscle by claiming four of five relay titles. Brandon Valley snagged the 1,600 relay, the final girls race of the day, with a time of 4:00.05.

"Our relays were special," said Stevens coach Paul Hendry. "We don't have any standout sprinters, but we take a lot of pride in our relays. Some of those girls run better with a baton in their hand. It's amazing. They put some extra effort into those relays."

Brookings senior Alexis Gannon closed out her decorated career as arguably the best girls distance jumper in South Dakota history with triple jump and long jump titles Friday and was crowned with girls field MVP honors Saturday.

On the track, Pierre sophomore sprinter Cortney Dowling saw her prep career reach a new level as she defended her 100 and 200 titles and knocked off defending 400 champion Brooke Ireland of Sturgis with an all-time state record time of 55.11. That clocking bested the 55.2 mark set by former stars Kari Heck of Washington and Jasmyne King of Rapid City Central.

"It's really surprising because South Dakota's had such a history of great, fast runners," said Dowling. "To be up there is really an honor. There's no way I could have done it without Brooke. She pushed me the whole way."

The season could be a jumping off point for Dowling, who notched top-five all-time marks in the 100 and 200 as well as winning the 200-meter special event at the Dakota Relays. But she also acknowledged that she'll go from rising phenom to the target in the near future.

"I know there's always going to be someone out there," she said. "There's always going to be that younger runner coming up. They don't just go away. It's awesome to look forward to."

Class A: Sioux Falls Christian girls soar to first title since 1985; Custer boys complete successful title defense

High expectations gave way to even higher performances on Saturday for the Sioux Falls Christian girls, who started out fast and kept getting faster on the way to a team title at the Class A state track meet at Howard Wood Field.

It was the first state team title for Sioux Falls Christian since 1985 and it had been percolating for some time. The Chargers finished sixth in 2011, third in 2012, then second last year before breaking through impressively at this meet with a dominating effort in the relays that was sprinkled with individual first-places elsewhere.

The Custer boys duplicated their team title of a year ago, scoring 103 points. Like Sioux Falls Christian, it was built with upperclassmen who were pretty smooth at rushing the baton around the track.

Showing ample amounts of consistency and elasticity, the Chargers claimed all four of Saturday's relay races. Short or long, they were finishing first.

"We were really dedicated to this year because so many of us were seniors," said Miranda Velgersdyk, who won the 400, finished second in the 200 behind EPJ's Keely Bertram, and provided the anchor leg for a record-setting 1,600 relay effort that ended the meet for the Chargers.

"So we wanted to end it with a bang. We had our expectations but I don't think we were expecting to do quite this well. We're more than happy and we're so blessed to have the team and the coaching staff that we have."

Sioux Falls Christian coach Bob Garry estimated the Chargers would need to hit triple-digits to win the meet, which seemed like quite a haul given that they entered the day with 26 points.

But the coach was witness to a near-perfect day that began with girls track MVP Jordyn Oostra's win in the 100-meter hurdles. About an hour later, they won the 800 relay with four seniors – Kara Koth, Stacy Smidt, Kristin Stern and Velgersdyk – carrying the baton.

Then came a win in the 400 relay, followed by Velgersdyk winning the 400 – which was then followed by Oostra taking the 300 hurdles and Charger sophomore Shelby Zomermaand taking second.

And on it went, with meet record in the medley relay and – with the state title already in hand – a meet record in the 1,600 relay.

Everywhere Garry looked, good things were happening.

"We asked a lot of kids to do a lot of work," Garry said, going on to list several Chargers who ran, counting heats, seven or eight races over the two-day meet.

"That last race, they ran a sub-four relay on their eighth race of the weekend – that's unheard of. All of the credit goes to the girls," he said. "Of the 15 events we competed in, you'd have a very hard time finding a spot where we had a shortcoming ... what they were able to do today was not easy. To put it together like they did was awesome."

The awesomeness began with Oostra's win in the hurdles, which she duplicated a few hours later in the 300.

"It was a PR in both and a good way to end my career," Oostra said. "It was so exciting today to see everyone PR-ing and breaking records – especially at the state meet. It was great be a part of this with these people."

The Custer boys posted wins in the 3,200 relay on Friday, then came back to take the medley and the 1,600 on Saturday with Brennan Witt anchoring both. Witt, who won the 800 on Friday, was part of two competitive finishes with his anchor legs.

"This was a true team win for us," Witt said. "Going into the mile relay we knew we had the meet won but we wanted to put on a show to end it well and get another medal. And that's what we did – it felt good to end things that way."

Dell Rapids fell short of Custer in the team competition with 85 points but several of the Quarriers' individual efforts were recognized. Bret Nichols, who won the long jump on Friday, came back and one the triple-jump Saturday morning and earned the MVP of the 'A' meet for field athletes for the boys while Emma Johnson of Tri-Valley earned the field award for the girls.

Nichols' teammate Zach Schroeder, who won the 100 and 200 on Saturday, claimed the boys award for the track category.

"I knew we'd be in the running for the team championship so I tried to do everything I could do to help us out," Schroeder said. "I knew we were down going into the four-by-four so I really tried to give it my all in the 200. The 100 felt really good coming out of the blocks – everything felt good today."

The 200 included Landon Larson of Groten Area, who won the 400, and also Hudson Priebe of Chamberlain, who won both hurdles races.

"We were in the wind on the last 100," Schroeder said. "I saw (Larson) slowing a little and I tried to take advantage of that and win the last race of my high school career."

While Priebe fell just short in that race, the Drake-bound hurdler was sharp otherwise.

"I was sticking to what I do best – run the hurdles," Priebe said. "It's all about getting comfortable running them and getting in a little rhythm."

Priebe has been running the two races since middle school with a family tree full of elders who also practiced the craft. He was clocked at 14.8 seconds in his win in the 110-meter and won the 300 with a time of 39.04. Both were the best of the day in any class.

"It's a cruel event," Priebe said of the 300. "It's all about repetitions – you can't run the 300 hurdles without doing it a lot. Winning two today felt amazing. Last year I couldn't quite do it, but it feels great to come back this year and get two golds."

There were other highlights. Hailey Streff, who won the 3,200 on Friday, came back with a win in the 1,600 on Saturday and anchored a second-place finish for Bulldogs' medley relay team. Her teammate Coley Stroller won her third consecutive triple-jump, leaping 35-10.25. Justine Zylstra of Canton was right behind at 35-9.25. Four jumpers finished within four inches of the winner.

"There were a lot of good jumpers who were very consistent," said Stroller, who will compete at Augustana next year. "That made it tougher, but they were really good and we had a good time with it. I'd hope to get a 35-footer today because I'd hit it once before and this was my farthest jump this season."

And on the topic of close finishes, Canton thrower Tyler Lems finished second by a half-inch in the shot on Friday but came back and took the mystery out of the discus competition on Saturday with a throw of 169-7.

It was more than 10 feet farther than his nearest competitor.

At 6-2 and a little over 200 pounds, no one would call Lems a small guy, but compared to some of the giants he's usually going up against in the shot and the disc, he's giving away anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds to many of his competitors.

Not a problem, he said.

"I've been throwing varsity since eighth grade so I've gotten used to it," he said. "I'm smaller than a lot of the guys but I'll take it – there's a lot of technique to this."

Class B: Ipswich girls continue dynasty; Parker boys grab title in close race

Ipswich and Macy Heinz are amid one of the best runs in South Dakota Class B girls track and field history.

That became official Saturday in rather ho-hum fashion at Howard Wood Field.

The Tigers scored 97 points to claim their third team title in a row at the state meet, tying Armour (1981-83) and Chester (1990-2001) for the longest reign in the division since it began in 1975. Although well back of Ipswich, Irene-Wakonda scored 35.5 points to fend off Chester Area (35), Arlington (34) and Freeman (34) for runner-up honors.

The freshman Heinz scored 40 points by herself in winning the 100, the 400 and the 1,600 on Saturday to go with the 800-meter championship she claimed Friday. That's four individual titles, the maximum under entry rules. It pushed her career state title total to 11 – nine solo and two relays.

Her last first of the day came in the 400. Heinz crossed the finish line, dropped to a knee then sat on the track, taking a well-earned rest. Before long she was back on her feet by the awards area, receiving more hardware – she was named meet MVP for the third year in a row – and congratulating other runners.

"I was tired – mentally, too, with all the races," said Heinz, who last year ran three individual races and a relay. "But everything turned out great. I'm really thankful for that."

She made it look easy. In order, Heinz won the 100 (12.51), the 1,600 (5:13.53) then the 400 (57.10). There was about an hour in between each race – 45 minutes after podium time. She tried to take off her shoes, stay loose and warm and scarf some beef jerky and Powerade.

The most interesting race was the 100 because this was her third experience with that distance at a high school meet. She had to beat defending champ Sierra Stotz of Eureka/Bowdle. She did by .22.

Nobody was within 1.82 seconds of the lean, rangy Heinz in the three longer races. Her combined margin: 11.14. It was her first title in the 100, her second in the 400 and her third in the 800 and 1,600.

She's the centerpiece of a young Tigers team that also is the reigning Class B state champs in cross country. They brought 17 kids to the state track meet; only one is a senior.

Surprisingly, Ipswich didn't win its region meet, instead gearing the entire season toward state. They made good on that goal with room to spare – and there's no end in sight to their run.

"We have a wonderful team," Heinz said. "Hopefully we can continue to do this."

The boys half of the Class B meet went down to the wire, as Parker claimed its first-ever crown by topping defending champ Herreid/Selby Area by a single point at 58-57.

Initially, Pheasants coach Phil Bjorneberg thought his squad – third last year – had lost by a point. He was delighted by the miscalculation. Rather than lamenting narrow misses, he got to laud victories big and small.

There were three clear highlights. Parker claimed first in two relays – the 3,200 on Friday and the sprint medley Saturday. Sophomore Zack Anderson, slumping a bit of late after a hot start to the season, won the high jump at 6-4 in something of an upset over defending champ and Herreid/Selby senior Dakota Thorstenson.

Less obviously, the Pheasants gained an unexpected point in the 110 hurdles when sophomore Kordell Buyck snagged a bid to the finals. Also, senior Eric Hunstad scored a point in the 300 hurdles in adventurous fashion. He was impeded in the prelims Friday and awarded a rerun on an otherwise empty track, posting a qualifying time in that second chance.

"It's so nice to be on the other side of it," said Bjorneberg, whose team began the day in third. "I've got great group of seniors and a couple really good sophomores."

Wessington Springs senior Jase Kraft capped his decorated career by defending his title in the 1,600 at 4:19. It was his third individual title of the weekend – he won the 800 and the 3,200 on Friday – and his fourth of the school year when added to a cross country crown earned in the fall.

The University of Sioux Falls recruit was gassed by the 400 finals, finishing eighth and underscoring the difficulty of what Heinz accomplished. But he left plenty satisfied, having left everything on the track.

Despite being unchallenged by the field, he went down hard at the finish line in the 1,600 in an attempt to break the state meet that was set in 1988. Kraft came up 0.56 short.

"The last two years I've been going after the (distance) triple crown," he said. "It was a little mental problem I had last year. This year, I said take it one race at a time instead of trying to do the whole thing in one race."
