A pair of individuals won their respective races to help lead their teams to first-place showings as well during the De Smet Invitational cross-country meet on Thursday.

Cole Sargent of Miller won the boys’ race as the Rustlers ran away with the team title with just seven points.

Freeman’s Cailey Roth grabbed the girls’ race as the Flyers won the team crown by four points over runner-up Sioux Valley.

Aberdeen Christian, on the strength of a top-10 finish from Tucker Iwerks, finished sixth in the boys’ standings with 59 points. The Knights were just six points out of third place in the bunched-up field.

“It was really close,” said Christian coach David Rohrbach of the final team points.

Iwerks ran a time of 18:20.4 to finish in 10th place in a field that featured many Class A runners.

“He wasn’t even feeling his best physically and still ran a better time than he did the first meet,” Rohrbach noted, “so that’s really encouraging for us.”

The Knights also had three runners that placed between 33rd and 44th. While pleased that his runners were able to run in a pack, Rohrbach would like to see that group inch a bit closer to the top.

“They ran really well together, but if we could get them to move up a little bit in the ranks, that would be great,” Rohrbach said.

Rohrbach was pleased with his team’s showing, especially against a large field of runners.

“Most everyone improved their times,” he noted. “I thought we did really well.”

The main reason that the Knights traveled to De Smet was because that is where the region meet will be held next month.

“It’s good for the kids to run the course at least once before it really matters,” Rohrbach said.

Christian won the boys’ JV team title, with Matt Grebner claiming a first-place finish.

After a 10-day layoff between meets, the Knights now have two meets in three days as they head to Ipswich on Saturday.

“It will really test the kids’ endurance,” Rohrbach said. “We’ve been kind of preparing for it.”
