Sports briefs: Roosevelt boys dominate meet

Roosevelt's boys and Brandon Valley's girls were cross country champions at the Augustana Meet of Champions on Saturday at Windrows Field.

Roosevelt – led by the 1-2-3 finish of Jesus Urtusuastegui (17:39.71), Daniel Armstrong (17:56.73) and Tyler Slaba (18:07.11) – had 22 points. Brandon Valley had 67 and West Central 110. In the girls race, BV had 42 points, Washington 54 and Roosevelt 90. Gayville-Volin's Laura Nelson was the winner in 15:34.06. Washington's Kelsi Kearney was second in 15:43.94.

NIKE HEARTLAND PREVIEW at Yankton Trail Park – Madison's girls and the boys from Willmar, Minn., won team titles. Madison's girls had 74 points. Custer had 84 and St. Thomas More 99. Madison's Emily Hawkes won in 14:45.24 with Madi Schandelmeier of Luverne, Minn., second in 14:59.02. In the girls 5K race, Willmar won and Jeralyn Poe of Lincoln North Star was first in 18:31.36.

In the boys race, Willmar had 61 points with Harrisburg second with 79 and O'Gorman third with 89. Willmar's Nadir Yusuf was first in 17:02.82 with Harrisburg's Greyson Zamora second in 17:15.68.

Vikings go 4-0 in NSIC Challenge

The Augustana volleyball team won twice Saturday at the Elmen Center to close out the NSIC Challenge with a 4-0 record. The Vikings beat Fort Hays State (Kan.) 25-14, 25-20, 25-19 and South Dakota Mines 25-19, 25-19, 25-15.

Against Fort Hays, Courtney Ysker had nine kills and Bailey Koch added eight kills with a team-best .400 attack percentage. Tahlyr Banks had 15 digs and Brittany Cech 11. Ashley Wilson had six block assists.

Against Mines, the Vikings (7-1) hit .362. Ysker had 13 kills and Wilson had 11 and hit .526. Banks had 12 digs. Sykora had 25 set assists and Johnson 20. For Mines (3-5), Mikkella Reese had 12 kills, and Carsyn Garcia had 11 digs and 25 set assists.

SMU DEF. SOUTH DAKOTA 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 at Fayetteville, Ark. – The Mustangs (7-1) outhit USD .301-.198. For USD, Kendall Kritenbrink had 14 kills, Riley Haug 12 digs and Brittany Jessen 26 set assists.

SOUTH DAKOTA DEF. STONY BROOK (N.Y.) 25-15, 24-26, 25-23, 25-22 – The Coyotes (4-5) won as Kritenbrink had 24 kills and Sydney Dimke 12. Audrey Reeg had 18 digs, Haug 16 and Jessen 10. Jessen had 41 set assists. Stony Brook is 4-7.

EASTERN ILLINOIS DEF. SOUTH DAKOTA ST. 27-25, 25-15, 25-12 in Brookings – EI (5-3) outhit the Jackrabbits .242-.111. For SDSU (4-6), Mikala Hora had seven kills and hit .400. Brooke Leetham had 11 set assists and Jessi Henter 10. Alanna Pengilly had 16 digs.

IOWA DEF. SOUTH DAKOTA ST. 25-17, 25-22, 25-19 – The Hawkeyes (7-2) won as Alessandra Dietz had 15 kills and hit .882. Iowa outhit the Jackrabbits .426-.284. For SDSU (4-7), Wagner Larson had nine kills and hit .571. Kacey Hermann had 10 digs, and Tiara Gibson had five block assists. Henter had 16 set assists and Leetham 13.

Brandon Valley wins golf tourney

BROOKINGS – The Brandon Valley golf team won the 14-team Brookings Invitational on Saturday at Brookings Country Club, and Yankton's Jace Guthmiller was the individual champ for the second day in a row.

The Lynx had a score of 313. Yankton was second at 322 and O'Gorman third at 326. Guthmiller, who won the Yankton Invitational on Friday, shot a 73 on Saturday to win by four shots over Brandon Valley's Alex Hamer and Greg Koehn and Washington's Will Grevlos.
