High school track and field: Aberdeen Central squads open up at SDSU Invite

The Aberdeen Central track and field squads got an opening taste of action Saturday at the South Dakota State Ruth Marske High School Indoor Invitational.

Both teams posted 10th-place finishes in the team results, with the girls’ squad posting 41 points and the boys’ finishing with 32.

The Ipswich girls finished sixth overall with 52.75 points.

While neither Aberdeen Central squad returned with an individual medalist from the meet, there were several scoring performances in a loaded field that saw teams from three states in attendance. 

Tasia Ochs finished in runner-up position in the discus to highlight the girls’ portion of Saturday’s action for Central. Jenna Grismer (triple jump) and Aimee Padgett (pole vault) brought home third-place finishes, as did Jamie Larson in the long jump.

“Obviously, our strength was our field events today,” said head girls’ coach Jim Appl. “You can tell everyone else had a meet in ahead of us, but our field events really showed up well. That was good to see.”

Padgett’s performance led a bevy of athletes in the pole vault for Central, which put three other athletes in a four-way tie for seventh.

Chelsey Bad Moccasin and Tessa Kimbler tied for fifth in the 300-meter hurdles, as well.

“We’re a little further behind on the track than our competition, but that’s okay,” Appl said. “I thought our kids competed real hard.”

While field events anchored the girls’ team’s day, it was action on the track that spurred the boys’ squad.

The Golden Eagles got individual efforts from Tanner Peltier — who was third in the 3,200 meters and sixth in the 1,600 — and Marc Seitz — seventh in the 300-meter hurdles — plus scoring efforts by the 4x200 and 4x400-meter relay squads.

Seitz also finished third in the pole vault, while Sam Schaunaman was third in the shot put.

Ipswich was anchored by double-event winner Macy Heinz, who won the 800 by more than four seconds and the 1,600 by 17 seconds.

Heinz just missed on her goal of breaking 5:00 in the 1,600, finishing in 5:04.32.

Tori Moore and Aleah Steger were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 3,200 meters for the Tigers.

The Aberdeen Central squads are back in action on Thursday at the Al Sahli Invitational. Ipswich will have a bit of a shorter turnaround, as the Tigers are set to run at the NSU Invite on Tuesday.
