FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. — Carly Carper and Karley Konkol won individual titles at the South Dakota State women's track and field team's first meet of the outdoor season, the Arkansas Spring Invitational held Saturday at John McDonnell Field.
Carper continued her indoor success with a win in the 100-meter dash, clocking in at 11.87. Konkol scored her first victory of the 2014-15 campaign, winning the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:43.87.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Lori Foltz posted the second-fastest time in school history, clocking in at 1:02.35 to place third. She is only the second Jackrabbit to record a time faster than 1:03.00. Marissia Hagedorn cracked the South Dakota State top-10 in this event, claiming ninth with a time of 1:04.13.
Jazzelena Black opened the outdoor season on a high note, placing second in the triple jump with a mark of 40-1.25. The 4x400 relay team of Foltz, Jacleen Patterson, Sandra Gramer and Dykstra placed third with a time of 3:57.04 while Carper timed in at 24.49 to place fourth in the 200-meter dash.
Coming off an upset victory in the long jump at the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships, Ashley Odegaard placed fifth with a distance of 18-1.50.
In the 800-meter run, Renae Dykstra (2:16.07) and Marisa Shady (2:16.28) finished back-to-back, at fourth and fifth. Kirsten Anderson (11:00.97), Alex Suhr (11:03.28) and Megan West (11:03.77) placed second, third and fourth respectively in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Anderson's time was a personal record but keeps her slotted in eighth in school history.
South Dakota State also sent athletes to the Wildcat Classic in Wayne, Neb. There, Amy Leiferman tied for first in the pole vault with a height of 12-1.25, the third-best in school history. She is now one of four Jackrabbits to clear 12-0 in this event.
Laura Lawton placed third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:53.52. Trisha Sumption improved her personal record in the hammer throw to 169-10 but remains slotted in seventh in school history. With a heave of 169-9, Silvia Zanini cracked the South Dakota State top-10, claiming eighth.
The Jackrabbits will compete at two different meets next weekend: the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. and the Dakota Duals in Sioux Falls, S.D.
