Viking Men Finish 10th, Women 13th at Division II Cross Country National Championships

The Augustana men's cross country team took 10th place at the 2009 NCAA Cross Country National Meet in Evansville, Ind. The women, who were competing in their fourth-consecutive national championships, finished in 13^th place.

The men finished with 313 points, just behind ninth place Harding with 296. Adams State took home the men's title with 33 points. This marks the men's best finish since finishing ninth in 1999. It is Augustana's third top-10 finish in school history.

Junior Matt Braithwaite led the way for the Vikings, posting a time of 32:35.9 to finish in 41^st place. He was less than two seconds from earning All-American honors. Next was junior Tom Karbo with a 54th finish. He completed the course in 32:50.7.

Sophomore Austin Vande Berg was the next best Viking, coming in at No. 72 with a time of 33:09.3. Sophomore Travis Beniak came in with a time of 33:56.04 to earn 10^th place and senior Matt Heesch finished just seven seconds behind Beniak with a time of 34:14.4, earning him 115^th place.

Also running for the Vikings was junior Daniel Black, coming in 121^st with a time of 34:14.4 and freshman Ryan Evans, who finished 139^th in 34:44.8.

On the women's side, Adams State took home the team title with 73

points. The Augie women took 13^th place with 350 points.

Freshman Kyle Blakeslee was the top Viking woman, finishing in 41st place in 22:00.2, narrowly missing All-American honors by less than one second. Joining her is senior Molly Clark, with a 50^th place finish and a time of 22:13.4.

Senior Jillian Tholen took 103^th place, running the race in 23:06.6 and freshman Leah Hansen finished in 118^th place in 23:19.2. Miriam Hovda was close behind her with a time of 23:20.8, earning her 119^th place.

Senior Alyssa Anderson came in 123^rd with a time of 23:24.7 and freshman Annie Pfeifle ran in 24:06.9 to finish 158^th.
