The Augustana men's and women's track and field teams turned in some impressive performances at the Ted Nelson Classic Saturday in Mankato, Minn.
For the Viking women,
Annie Pfeifle won two events, claiming the 3,000-meter run and the mile run. She turned in a time of 10:23.53 in the 3,000 meters and a time of 5:10.84 to capture the mile run.
Pfeifle led a strong showing by the Vikings in the 3,000 meters as Augie had five of the top six finishers.
Kyle Blakeslee was second in 10:24.82, while
Alyssa Anderson,
Jillian Tholen and Leah Hansen finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
Augustana also claimed the top three positions in the 1,000 meters.
Linn Nilsson won the event in 2:56.59, while
Caitlin Polgreen and
Molly Kokesh were second and third. In addition, the Vikings went 1-2-3 in the 800 meters.
Kelly Kougl crossed the finish line in first place in 2:21.39, just ahead of teammates
Megan Erspamer and
Allison Henke.
In the field events,
Karissa Pepin tied for first place in the high jump. She cleared 5-1, along with Sarah Baker of Gustavus Adolphus and Nish Rubash of St. Cloud State. Also,
Hollie Bloom tied for fourth place in the pole vault as she cleared 10-06.25.
Noel Bentele and
Rachel Christiansen led Augustana in the throwing events. Bentele finished third in the shot put with a toss of 40-04.25, while Christiansen was seventh. In the weight throw, Christiansen's best heave of 47-11.25 to place fourth, while Bentele was fifth at 47-08.50.
On the men's side, the Vikings had two event winners, Corey Sugden and
Diego Oquendo. Sugden dominated the high jump as he cleared 6-06.75 to win the event by 6 inches.
Meanwhile, Oquendo won the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.37 seconds. In addition, teammate
Paul Mallory was third in 8.53 seconds. Oquendo also fared well in the 60-meter dash as he finished second in 6.92 seconds. Teammate
Brock Bills was third in 7.16 seconds.
In the 3,000 meters,
Matt Braithwaite crossed the finish line in second place in a time of 8:47.69.
In the 500 meters,
Aduo Omot placed third in 1:05.83, while
Brian Werner was fifth in 1:07.94. The Vikings took third, fourth and fifth place in the 1,000 meters.
Austin Vande Berg was third in 2:35.33, while
Dan Black and
Travis Beniak finished fourth and fifth. Vande Berg also finished fifth in the mile run in a time of 4:21.36.
In the throwing events,
Aaron Jung placed second in the shot put with a throw of 51-03.50.
Augustana will be in action again next week at the Iowa State Classic.
