Tracy Hellman has been named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Central Region Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year, the USTFCCCA announced today.
In his seventh year as the head coach of the Viking women's team, Hellman led the Vikings to their first-ever conference championship as they won the NSIC Women's Indoor team title with a total of 146 points.
Hellman's athletes broke seven school records during the indoor season and recorded a total of 15 automatic or provisional qualifying marks. The Vikings will be represented in three events at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.
It has been quite a year for Hellman in 2009-10. This past fall Hellman, who is also the head men's and women's cross country coach, directed both Viking teams to the NSIC championships. Both teams advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championships, where the men's team finished 10th in the nation, while the women finished 13th.
