Augie Track & Field Teams Have Strong Showing at Vance Butler Invitational

The Augustana track and field teams showed a strong start to the outdoor season at the Vance Butler Invitational on Thursday. The Vikings had six first place finishers on the day.

The Viking women dominated the 3000 meter run, with Runa Falsch winning the event in 10:11.14. Behind her was Kyle Blakeslee in second at 10:18.60. Annie Pfeifle was fourth in a time of 10:27.23. Leah Hansen finished ninth in 10:57.10 and Courtney Rasmussen was 11th in 11:12.99.

Another good event for the Vikings was the 1500 meter run. Caitlin Polgreen won the event in 4:46.97 and was followed closely by Molly Kokesh, who earned second with a time of 4:51.52.

The Augie also women finished well in the 3000 meter steeplechase, with Molly Clark finishing in second with a time of 11:20.87. Miriam Hovda was fourth, finishing in 11:44.45.

In the 100 meter hurdles, the Vikings had three women finish in the top 10. Claire Severson was sixth with a time of 15.90. Meagan Grandgenett was ninth and Bobbi Jo Buyck 10th, finishing in 16.31 and 16.51, respectively.Megan Erspamer finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles in 70.18.

In the field events,Noel Bentele had a strong showing for the day, winning the hammer throw with a mark of 156-02. In the shot put, she took fourth with a throw of 39-02.25. Karissa Pepin was eighth in the high jump. She leaped 5-00.25. 

Buyck was also fourth in the long jump, leaping 16-8.00. Rachel Christiansen took second in the discus. Her best throw was 128-08. Kacie Erikson finished seventh in the pole vault with a final attempt of 10-1.25.

On the men's side, Augie did well in the 3000 meter run. Tom Karbo was first with a time of 8:27.90 while Matt Heesch finished fourth in 9:04.30. Matt Braithwaite rounded out the trio with a ninth place finish of 9:19.48.

The Vikings had three finishers in the top 10 in the 1500 meter run. Brian Werner was second with a time of 4:03.25 while Austin Vande Berg finished fourth in 4:04.58. Jordan Slusser ran the race in 4:08.66, earning eighth place.

Another strong race for the Vikings was the 3000 meter steeplechase. Travis Beniak won the event in 9:29.87. Daniel Black was fifth in a time of 9:48.16.

Paul Mallory took home the 110 hurdles title for the Vikings. He finished in 15.07. Mallory was also fourth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.17 while Zach Morris was close behind in 57.41 to earn fifth place.

Aduo Omot took fourth place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.34. He also finished 10th in the 200 meter dash, finishing in 22.77.

In the men's field events, Corey Sugden's jump of 6-6.00 earned him sixth place and Jacob Pohlmann was eighth in the pole vault with a vault of 11-3.00. Pohlmann also finished 10th in the javelin with a throw of 138-03.

The Vikings will be on the road on Saturday as they travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Nebraska Invitational.
