JR. WOMEN 3,000-METER STEEPLECHASE RESULTS
JR. MEN 800-METER RUN RESULTS
DES MOINES, Iowa – Augustana's two athletes competing at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships finished final round contests Friday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, and collected a pair of top-seven finishes.
Kyle Blakeslee posted a fourth-place finish in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, while
Aduo Omot finished seventh in the men's 800-meter run.
To be eligible to compete in the Championships, athletes cannot turn 20 years old during 2010.
Blakeslee, who was a freshman with the Augustana track and field program this past season, finished the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 11.83 seconds to grab fourth place. The Cannon Falls, Minn., native entered the race with the No. 3 seed. She will compete in the finals of the 5,000-meter run tomorrow at 5:55 p.m. and has the third seed.
"Kyle ran a very strong race, considering the tough weather conditions," said Augustana head track and field coach
Tracy Hellman, who was on hand in Des Moines. "Placing fourth is a great accomplishment and caps an outstanding freshman year."
Omot, who was also a freshman last season, posted a time of 1:51.00 in the 800-meter run to pick up his seventh-place honor. A native of Worthington, Minn., Omot made it to the finals after posting a time of 1:51.90 in the opening round of the event yesterday. He entered the race with the No. 2 seed.
"Adou ran a great race in his first USA Championships," Hellman said "Placing seventh in a field of mainly Division I standouts is a remarkable experience, and this experience will be very valuable in future national meet opportunities."
The top three finishers in each event qualify for the International Association of Athletics Federations Junior Track and Field Championships. This year's competition will be held in Moncton, Canada on July 19-25.
