We're finally racing in the Mount Rushmore State! After a long indoor season, the sprint (no pun intended) is on towards next month's state championships. Though there has been limited action so far, check out some of the top performances from opening week in South Dakota.

Sprint Events - Top Performers
Beckett Martens, Tea Area - The sophomore got off to a strong start this spring, running 11.10 to set the early season SD #1 in the 100m dash. The mark is a significant 0.2-second personal best and could signal a breakout year ahead for the underclassman.
Dawood Toto, Tea Area - He posted a state-leading 41.31 in the 300m hurdles to open his season, coming within 0.3 seconds of his personal best. After finishing eighth in last year's state prelims, the junior looks ready to take a step forward this spring.
Sydney Stahlecker, Tea Area - She opened her season with an impressive 57.11 in the 400m dash, setting the top-ranked time in the event. Astate finalist from last year, she placed fifth in the biggest race of the year. For the second straight year, the junior won the 400m dash at the Scott Underwood Invitational, running over two seconds faster this time around.
Halle Braun, Sioux Falls Christian - The senior picked up just where she left off in 2025, running 14.85 in the 100m hurdles on Monday after capturing a state title in the event last season. She has now won six of her last nine races in the event, dating back to April 10th of last year, continuing her hot streak in the short-hurdles event.

Field Events - Top Performers
Micah Goehring, Scotland - He delivered a strong early-season performance in the triple jump, winning the Gary Memorial with a mark of 43-5.5, setting the state-leading mark in South Dakota. After not competing at the state meet last season, he's off to a breakout start this spring and will look to make noise on the biggest stage later next month.
Katie Humpal, Sioux Falls Christian - The sophomore posted a SD #1 mark of 35-6.25 to win the triple jump at the Scott Underwood Invitational. The performance puts her at the front of the field early as she looks to continue building on her season debut in the event.
Hadlee Holt, Lake Preston - She picked up her second win of the season in the shot put with a throw of 42-5.5. The senior finished 3rd in the shot put at state last year, while also finishing second in the discus, and her performances so far this season maintains her status as one of South Dakota's top throwers.
Distance Events - Top Performers
Jeter Scoular, Milbank - Taking over the early-season SD #1 in the 3,200m is the junior, who ran 10:24. The distance standout kicked off his season strong, coming off a breakout cross country season that saw him place 14th at the state meet.
Sadie Pettengill, Sioux Falls Christian - The sophomore has established herself as South Dakota's early-season favorite in the 800m, running a state-leading time of 2:19 en route to a win at the Scott Underwood Invitational. After placing fourth at the state meet last year, she looks poised to make a push for the top of the podium in 2026.
Ellie Maddox, Sioux Falls Christian - The state's most decorated distance runner ran a 4:48 in the 1,600m to win the Scott Underwood Invitational and set the standard for the event in South Dakota. The standout distance runner also qualified for Nike Cross Nationals this fall after a fourth-place finish at NXR Heartland and will be in the hunt to add to her high school resume further this spring.
