The first cross country meet of the year was a good one for the Pierre runners. On Friday, August 29 the Pierre Girls and Boys cross country team ran their only home meet of the season. The meet had three teams which included: Aberdeen Central, Rapid City Central, and the Pierre.
In the girls varsity division Emily Mikkelsen lead the charge with a 2nd placed finish and ran very well. Emily beat Shacey Burgess of Rapid City Central who placed 5th in the state meet last season. Cortney Dowling placed 4th and Mariah Fuchs placed 10th. The top 10 runners in each race received a medal for their efforts.
In the boys varsity race Jebben Keyes placed 2nd overall behind Tanner Peltier of Aberdeen Central. Jebben was followed by a host of runners which included, Seth McKinley 4th, Micah Howard 5th, Jack Wollman 6th and Porter Jones 9th. All 5 of these runners placed in the top 10.
In the girls’ junior varsity race Pierre was led by two 7th graders. Allycen Herrman placed 2nd and only 1 second behind her was Kyla Keyes. These two runners ran very well and look for bigger races from them as the season goes on. Aspen Iverson placed 6th and Sarah Polak 9th. These four runners will get varsity experience as the season goes on.
In the boys’ junior varsity, Ryan Mikkelsen placed 2nd in a field that had 46 total runners. Other top 10 performers were Caleb Lusk 6th, John Schueller 8th, and Zayn Snyder 9th.
No team points were kept at this meet and the boys varsity only ran a 4000 meters instead of 5000 meters.
The Varsity Boys Cross Country Win At Northern Hills Invite in Spearfish
The boys’ varsity cross country team took home the title at the Northern Hills Invite in Spearfish. They medaled 5 runners in the top 15. The team was lead again by Jebben Keyes who placed 2nd in a field of 41 total runners. His time was16:44 in the 5000 meter distance. Jacob Simmons from Sturgis won the race and is one of the top runners in the state. Seth Mckinley placed 7th, Porter Jones 9th, Jack Wollman 10th, and Micah Howard 12th. Other runners included, Ryan Mikkelsen 16th and Nick Mahowald 24. The team score was 23 points for Pierre followed by Rapid City Central with 54 points. These boys ran well and the time difference between the 3rd runner and 5th runner on our team was only 3 seconds.
The girls’ varsity was also lead again by Emily Mikkelsen who placed 8th in a field of 41 total runners. Her time was 16:23 in the 4000 meter distance. Pierre Lady Govs had two medalist in the top 15. The other runner was Hannah Shaffer who placed 14th. Other runners were Mariah Fuchs 17th and Aspen Iverson 22nd. The girls’ team did not run a full team at this meet. Custer won the team title with 45 points.
The boys’ JV was led by winner Bennett Eisenbeisz in the 5000 meter run. There were 46 runners in this race. This was a great confidence builder for Bennett and look forward in seeing Bennett improve throughout the season. Other runners in the top 15 were: Jim Barnett 5th, Vicente Ramirez 10th, Jamaal Covey 11th, Theron Singleton 14, and Zayn Snyder 15th. To have 6 in the top 15 is a great achievement for these boys. I am very proud of them.
In the girls JV race the top two runners were 7th graders from Pierre. Allycen Herrman and Kyla Keyes took the top two spots in the 4000 meters that had 32 runners. It is amazing that two 7th graders can placed 1st and 2nd in a high school race. They were followed by other medalist from Pierre Sarah Polak 8th, Morgan Leiferman 11th, and Sam Ullmann 13th.
In the boys’ freshman race Pierre had 4 runners in the top 15. They were: Cadin Buchholz 4th, Caleb Lusk 5th, Will Turman 8th, and Carsten Mueller 11th. It was nice that this meet had a freshman race so we could split up our JV team a little bit. We had no runners in the girls freshman race because we ran them in the JV race instead.
Our next race will be Friday, September 12 in Aberdeen with races starting 3:00 p.m. We look forward to this meet every year because Aberdeen host a great meet with nice medals and team trophies for the winners.
