Madison's Hailey Streff dominates Class A distance races
By Rich Winter
I'm already getting jazzed about the South Dakota state cross-country race next fall.
The Class A field in particular is going to be a battle!
Ninth grader Hailey Streff of Madison showed she is going to be a handful next season as she dominated action in the 1600 and 3200 at the Class A portion of the South Dakota state meet. In addition, Streff ran the anchor leg on Madison's medley relay team that was beaten to the line only by a record setting performance by Sioux Falls Christian.
Streff won the 3200 meter even on Friday in very hot weather with a time of 11:32. You wonder if, over the next few years, that Streff might even challenge Heidi Reed's meet record of 11:08 from 1991.
Streff came back on Saturday to clock a 5:08, 1600 meters that scared Reed's record of 5:03.
That state cross country race this fall in the Class A ranks looks like it is going to be rank. Defending champion Maddie Lavin of Vermillion had a solid state track meet. Marion Hohn of Hill City, second in the 1600, announced herself as a threat and Lead/Deadwood 7th grader Mattie Fairburn, 2nd in 3200 and 5th in 1600 will be a factor.
Greatness never takes a break for very long so I'm sure these girls will be back at it before too long
