WV Wesleyan Sweeps WVIAC XC Championships Douglas McDaniel Oct 26, 2008

WV Wesleyan re-claimed their stronghold on the WVIAC by winning the Men and Women Cross-Country Championship held at Wheeling, WV on Saturday, October 25, 2008. The Wesleyan men led by fresman Nathan Edwards' (27:32) 2nd place finish placed 4 men on the All-Conference team and won by a 38 point margin. Last season Edwards attended Claymont Hgh School in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Wheeling Jesuit took 2nd place with 78 points. Ryan Skotnicki of Alderson-Broaddus is the new WVIAC individual champion with a first place time of 27:25.

The lady Bobcats with 41 points won by a much closer margin than the men to overcome a strong Alderson-Broaddus (48 points) performance. Junior Breana Haggerty of Wesleyan edged junior Chelsea Hanne of Alderson Broaddus by 2 seconds for the indvidual title. Haggerty ran the 6K course in 23:48 with Hanne close behind in 23:50.

Region IV Recap Douglas McDaniel Oct 25, 2008

Region IV A-AA – Charleston Catholic girls with an amazing 17 points advance to the State meet with their Region IV Class A-AA win as they placed 5 girls in the top 10 and finished well ahead of Region runner-up Scott who grabbed 45 points. Ally Hoyer of Charleston Catholic got a region championship added to her resume as she won in 21:20. Teammate Anna Sampson claimed 2nd in 22:32.

 

Ravenswood boys led by 1st place and region champion Nathan Rees (17:48) and region runner-up Alex Cole (17:56) added another cross-country title with a low score of 24 points as they placed 4 runners in the top 5. Charleston Catholic was runner-up with 59 points. With his 3rd place finish, Chase Nelson (18:17) of Scott prevented a sweep of the top 4 places. Ravenswood boys and Charleston Catholic boys advance to next week’s State meet.

 

Region IV AAA – Hurricane girls led by juniors Alex Dent (1st place - 19:41.2) and Josie Crouch (2nd place – 19:50.02) won the Region IV title as the ladies from Hurricane placed 5 girls in the top 11 and 6 in the top 12 while gathering 30 points. Senior Megan Truelove of Winfield took 3rd in 19:54.13. Cabell Midland paced by senior Rachel Williams’ 4th place finish in 20:36.77 took team runner-up honors with 56 points.

Matthew Burton, a senior, of Winfield edged junior Nolan Queen of Cabell Midland for individual awards with a time of 17:35.68. Queen’s close finish was clocked in 17:37.71. However, Cabell Midland would claim the top spot with a big Region IV win an impressive showing (29 points).  Cabell Midland placed 5 runners in the top 10 as they tune up for the State meet. Trey Beckett of Cabell Midland grabbed the 3rd place position with a time of 17:41.78.

Region III Recap Douglas McDaniel Oct 25, 2008

Region III A-AA – Shady Spring girls placed all 7 of their runners in the top 10 as they put on a memorable performance. The ladies of Pikeview prevented the shutout as they placed two girls in the top 5. The final margin was 20-44. Chelsea Callaway, a senior, ran away from the field with a 32 second win in 20:29 over sophomore teammate Desiree Roseberry (21:03). Chelsea East (21:12) led the Pikeview girls to their 2nd place finish. Shady Spring girls and Pikeview girls advance to the State meet.

 

Pikeview of Princeton won an exciting and highly contested region title over strong and pesky Richwood with the slim margin of 2 points (33-35). Richwood placed 4 harriers in the top 8 but was edged out as Pikeview’s pack was a little more efficient as two runners, Brent Roarke (17:33) and Jordan Weitzel (17:59) placed 2nd and 3rd respectively and ahead of Richwood 1st place runner and 4th place finisher Derrick Chaffin (18:07). Both Pikeview and Richwood advance to next week’s State meet.

 

Region III AAA – Capital girls (34 points) of Charleston led by Chelsea Jarvis’ 40 second win over teammate Christine Azeredo claimed the Region III AAA crown. George Washington girls took the 2nd place and runner-up title with 55 points. Jarvis ran the only time under 20 minutes as she finished in 19:56 while runner-up Azeredo was a minute and 15 seconds ahead of the next runner.

 

On the boy’s side, South Charleston only had one boy to race. However, that did not stop David Caldwell from claiming the Region III AAA individual champion. Caldwell would post the only sub 17 minute time of the day in 16:55. 2nd place finisher Andy Bailey and 3rd place runner Caleb Ellis led St. Albans to the team championship with a score of 28 points. George Washington took 2nd with 54 points.

 

Advancing to the State meet are the girl’s teams of Capital and George Washington and the boy’s teams of St. Albans and George Washington.

 

Region II Recap Douglas McDaniel Oct 25, 2008

Region II A-AA – The Grafton girls led by Chanel Alexander’s 3rd place finish in 21:05 edged the ladies of Berkeley Springs (45-49) to capture the first place title of Region II A-AA champ. Rebecca McBride of Frankfort took the individual award with a time of 20:27. Sarah McCauley of Philip Barbour took 2nd with the only other sub 21 minute time in 20:40.

 

Berkeley Springs won both the team and individual awards as they finished ahead of Philip Barbour (40-53).  Lenny Roach led the Blue and Gold with his Region champion run in 17:08.  Riley Freeman of Philip Barbour was region runner-up in 17:27.

 

Advancing to the State meet are the girl teams of Grafton, Berkeley Springs and Franfort, and the boys teams of Berkeley Springs, Philip Barbour and Grafton.

 

Region II AAA – Hampshire girls and Jefferson boys took the AAA Region II titles. Sophomore Letitia Propst of Elkins ran away from the field with an impressive time of 19:49 easily outdistancing 2nd  and 3rd place finishers Alyssa Boucher (20:28) and Andrea Nickerson (20:29) of Jefferson. Freshman Danielle Lewis paced the ladies of Hampshire with a 5th place finish in 21:02.

 

Jefferson boys led by Cory Hampshire (17:08) easily won the region meet with 33 points with 4 boys in the top 10. Hampshire, a senior, continued his outstanding season by adding another title to his resume as he won the region meet over 2nd place finisher and senior John Paul Binotto (17:35)  of Hampshire.

 

Advancing to State meet are the girl teams of Hampshire, Buckhannon-Upshur, and Jefferson, and the boy teams of Jefferson, Hampshire, and Musselman.

Region I A-AA – Wheeling Central Catholic claimed both girls and boys Region I A-AA titles. The girls were led by Jessica John’s 2nd place finish in 20:41. The Wheeling Central girls (59) won in a close race over 2nd place finishing team of St. Mary’s (66). Hannah Kinney of Trinity Christian was the individual region champion with her 11 second victory in 20:30.

 

Ronald Read of Weir took the top prize in the boys 5K race in impressive fashion by 27 seconds with a time of 16:40. Edgell Cuylor of Doddridge County placed 2nd in 17:07.  Robert Bonenberger came in 3rd leading the Wheeling Central Catholic boys to the region title over 2nd place Doddridge County by a score of 55-73. 

 

Advancing to the State meet are the girls teams of Wheeling Central Catholic, St. Mary’s and Doddridge County, and the boys teams of Wheeling Central, Doddridge County, and Weir.

 

Region I AAA – University girls and Wheeling Park boys took home the top prizes at the Group AAA Region I meet. University placed 4 girls in the top ten and outpaced 2nd place Preston by a margin of 44-56. Ari Kasprowicz of Preston won the region champion designation with a time of 19:37 by destroying the field by a 55 second margin. Courtney Yeager of Wheeling Park was 2nd in 20:32.  Jordan McDonald of North Marion was 3rd in 20:49. Leading the first place team of University was Sarah Martinelli in 21:12. Lydia Martinelli (6th), Jennifer Van Der Sloot (9th), Allsion Kimble (10th), and Katelyn Wheeler (15th) secured the victory.

 

Cody Pelliccioni of Morgantown outclassed the field with a 28 second victory to claim the title of Region I AAA individual cross-country champion. Wheeling Park (63 points) led by 3rd place finisher, Kyle Gramlich (17:48) and 4th place runner, Logan Wojcik (17:52) won the meet over 2nd place finisher Preston (85 points). David Ciarolla of Fairmont Senior grabbed the runner-up designation with a time of 17:42.

 Advancing to the State meet are the girl teams of University, Preston, and Morgantown, and the boy teams of Wheeling Park, Preston, and Fairmont Senior.

The National Scholastics Sports Foundation has released the High School Regional Cross-Country rankings for Week ending 10/11. There are 10 West Virginia runners listed in the watch list.

Regional Team Rankings are broken down by region and were formulated by a committee led by Marc Bloom and Rich Gonzalez.  Individuals to Watch are compiled by our state ambassadors in each state and are listed alphabetically below the Regional Team Rankings by state.

Recap of Meets from 10/6 - 10/11

Ashland Invitational - Capital, Winfield, Ravenswood, Spring Valley, Huntington, Wayne  and George Washington traveled to Kentucky to participate in the Ashland Invitational and came away with the individual top prizes and the boys team title.

Megan Truelove , senior, of Winfield took first place in 19:55.9 while seniors Chelsea Jarvis and Christine Azevedo of Capital claimed 2nd and 3rd place respectively in 20:12 and 20:51. Mason County Kentucky girls team took top billing with 36 points. Ravenswood girls claimed 2nd place with 71 points and followed closely by Capital with 74 points.

Senior Nathan Rees of Ravenswood won the boys race in 17:03 and was followed by 2nd place finisher sophomore Patrick Jividen (17:11) and senior Matt Burton (17:24) of Winfield. Winfield boys led a West Virginia sweep as WV teams took the top 4 places. Winfield had 46 points, Ravenswood 54, Hurricane 115, and in 4th place was Huntington with 119 points.

Times Invitational - Fairmont Senior boys and girls took the win with North Marion finishing second. Letitia Propst a sophomore from Elkins won in 19:50 and senior Zach Tennant of North Marion took top honors for the guys in 16:34.2. He was followed closely by David Ciarolla a senior from Fairmont Senior in 16:39.4

Wheeling Park Fall Classic - Wheeling Park took the top honors for the girls with Wheeling Central Catholic taking second place with a score of 43-49. Courtney Yaeger of Wheeling Park came in first with a time of 20:17.6.

Logan Wojcik, a junior, from Wheeling Park and senior Russell Mulley led their team with finish times of 17:53 and 17:54 respectively.

Wild & Wet Invitational - Sarah and Lydia Martinelli juniors from University High School placed first and second leading their team to a commanding win over 2nd place Berkeley Springs by a score of 23-54. Sarah finished first in 22:08 followed by Lydia in 22:23.

Lenny Roach of Berkeley Springs finished in first place by 18 seconds over 2nd place Ronald Reed a senior from Weir with a time of 17:23. Reed came across in 17:41.

Washington Invitational - In dominating fashion Jefferson completed the sweep winning first place team honors and individual honors at the Washington Invitational. Alyssa Boucher won the girls race in 19:33 followed by teammate Andrea Nickerson in 19:57. The ladies placed 4 runners in the top 10.

Cory Hampshire continued his torrid streak by winning the meet in 15:58. Hampshire won the meet by 52 seconds over Kory Farmer who would lead the rest of the team with a 2nd place finish in 16:52. The Maroon and Gold boys of Jefferson put all 7 runners in the top 10 and had 5 of the first 6 finishers in the meet.

Bull Run Invitational - After running at the Washington Invitational 3 days earlier, Jefferson traveled to Maryland to put on another fine showing at the Bull Run Invitational. Cory Hampshire finished 4th overall and 3rd in the Elite race with a time of 16:53. Alyssa Boucher placed 12th overall in 20:53.

Battle for Parkersburg - The battle for Parkersburg was an all out war as Parkersburg took 1st place in the boys race (22-33) and Parkerburg South taking 1st place in the girls race with a score of 27-29. In the overall scoring, Parkersburg won the Battle for Pakersburg with a combined score of 51 points to Parkersburg South's 60 points.

Parkersburg individuals claimed both top prizes as Andrea Sall won the girls race in 19:17.8 and Dustin Meyers grabbing the boys title in an impressive16:58.2

Harrison County Championships - Bridgeport Senior took the boys race with 27 points and Liberty Harrison edged out Bridgeport for the girls win 41-43.

Leading the Bridgeport boys effort was Matt Mason in a quick 16:50 and followed closely by 2nd place finisher Seth Edgell in 16:56. Erica Voreh led the ladies with a time of 19:38

Liberty Raleigh Invitational - Shady Spring girls led by Chelsea Callaway put on a dominating performance with a first place win over 2nd place Woodrow Wilson 22-37. Callaway ran the fastest time in the State this year with a time of 18:30.

Derrick Chaffin led his Richwood team with his first place effort of 16:18. Richwood (22 points)  won in convinicing fashion. Woodrow Wilson took 2nd with 73 points.

(Correction) Cody Pelliccione a sophomore from of Morgantown ran a blazing 15:45.43 at the Octoberfest Invitational held on October 4th at The Plains, Virginia finishing 5th overall to a strong field.

Ari Kasprowicz of Preston is in 3rd with her 19:05.75 showing at the Mountaintop Combo. Allison Petit is a close 4th with a time of 19:08 at the Boathouse Red, White, and Blue Classic

Levi Grandt Wins Heat of Nike Outdoor 5K, 8th Overall Douglas McDaniel Jun 20, 2008

Levi Grandt of Doddridge County HS won his heat on Thursday night at Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, NC.  The senior and University of Richmond bound finished 8th overall with a personal best time time of 15:11.10. He competed in the first section.

Summer is a time for vacation and relaxation, but it is also a time that many runners begin their training for cross-country season. If you want your summer track meets, road races, or other running events posted, please e-mail them to me. I will be recognizing elite performances.

I hope all of you are ready for another exciting year of outdoor track and field in West Virginia. Please send in your schedules, results, photos, videos, announcements, articles, or anything else you would like for me to post. If anyone wants to be a team admin, let me know. You can have your own team page and keep your site up to date. It is like having your own web site within a site.

I am going to try a new route on elite performances. I am going to include all performances so you can chart your progress. Only meets in Hy-Tek will be used for all performances

I received this announcement of a new coaches association from Jon Griffith that I hope coaches of all levels will join.

In an effort to assist coaches and promote the sports of Track & Field and Cross Country, a new organization has been started that is designed for T&F and CC Coaches throughout the state.  

It is the mission of the West Virginia Track Coaches Assocation (WVTCA) to provide a place for Track & Field and Cross Country coaches from all levels of track & field and from all areas of the state to communicate, share ideas, promote, and be recognized. As Track & Field coaches, we need to be proactive in promoting our sport, our athletes, and ourselves. The WVTCA is dedicated to this idea. We seek to recognize the accomplishments of our coaches and communicate these successes whenever possible.

WVU, Marshall, and Wheeling Jesuit indoor track teams competed this weekend. Marshall was at the Kentucky Invitational while WVU was at the Penn State Relays. Wheeling Jesuit was at Kent State participating in the Doug Raymond Invitational.

San Diego, CA -- Underdog Michael Fout, a senior from Midwest LaPorte High School,  Indana, won the boys Foot Locker National Championship Saturday at Balboa Park in San Diego California with a time of 14:50. Junior Ashley Brasovan of South Wellington High School in West Palm Beach, Florida won the girls race in 17:20.

NCAA Division II Results Posted Douglas McDaniel Nov 17, 2007

NCAA Division II results from Joplin, Missouri are posted. Eric Cooper finished with a 10K time of 32:38.6 for 84th place. Former West Virginia Wesleyan standout, Pat Reagan of Slippery Rock placed 12th in 30:37.3 for the highest finishing East Region runner.

WVU Women Earn Bid to NCAA Cross Country Championship Douglas McDaniel Nov 12, 2007

Bethlehem, PA. –West Virginia University women’s cross country team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I National Cross Country Championship to be held on Saturday, November 19 at Indiana State University. The lady Mountaineers tallied 77 points to place second to Princeton’s 56 points at the 2007 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Mountaineers were led by 3rd place finisher, sophomore Marie-Louise Asselin, with a time of 20:00 on the 6K course. Clara Grandt from Doddridge County finished 6th in 20:20, and Keri Bland of North Marion was 7th in 20:21.Kaylyn Christopher (21:17) of Preston and Maria Dalzot (21:19) of Morgantown rounded out the scoring.

Cooper Qualifies for NCAA DII National Meet Douglas McDaniel Nov 04, 2007

Eric Cooper (Photo by Mary McDaniel), the two-time defending WVIAC Cross-Country champion, qualified for the NCAA Division II National Meet with a seventh place finish. Cooper went out with the leaders and never fail below 7th place overall during the meet. Cooper finished the 10K course in 31:26. Mansfield senior Chris Cummings joined Cooper as individual representatives with a 3rd place finish in 31:11. Edinboro won the meet and Slippery Rock finished 2nd to earn NCAA bids to the finals. 

Sarah Campanelli of Wheeling Jesuit was the highest finishing lady from the WVIAC with a 23rd place finish in the 6K race with a time of 22:39.

The NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships is on Nov. 17 at Missouri Southern State University. The men’s 10K race begins at 11:30 a.m.

Ona, WV--  University Girls and Wheeling Park Boys take AAA races. Grafton Girls and Ravenswood Boys take AA-A races. State Champions are: Freshman Letitia Propst of Elkins, Ryan Beabout of Wheeling Park, Rachel Buser of Berkeley Springs, and Levi Grandt of Doddridge County.

Concord men win Greensboro Invitational Defeating Southeast #1 ranked Mars Hill Douglas McDaniel Sep 29, 2007

Greensboro, NC -- The 8th ranked East Region team of Division II, Concord University men, met the challenge of the #1 ranked Southeast region Division II team, Mars Hill College, and came away with a decisive 33-40 victory. Concord placed 5 runners in the top 13 places and put 5 runners ahead of Mars Hill’s 4th runner. Ryan Kent led the Mountain lions with a 4th place finish in the 8K with a time of 26:40.3. Randy Horner was 5th overall in 26:47.2.  Wingate University took 3rd place with 64 points and was led by 1st place finisher Jayce Watson with a time of 26:06.3.

One of the athletes killed in the senseless shootings at Virginia Tech was Jarrett
Lane of Narrows. Narrows is a small rural community near the West Virginia border. Jarrett was valedictorian of his senior class. Many remember him for his track performances.

In 2002 at his Mountain Empire District outdoor track meet, Jarrett received 5 All-
District designations. Jarrett was 2nd in the Triple Jump, 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 3rd in the high jump, and 4th in the long jump. Jarrett went on to place in the 110m hurdles at the Region D meet making him All-Region and qualifying him for the Single A State meet.

In 2003, Jarrett repeated the feat and was All-District in the same 5 events. At the Region C Meet, Jarrett was All-Region in the triple jump (2nd) and 110M hurdles (4th).
